Callaway and St Andrews Links ‘The Big Bag Trail’ auction raises £126,000

July 22, 2022 – A total of £126,000 has been raised in a charity auction of The Big Bag Trail sculptures, a unique creative collaboration between partners, Callaway and St Andrews Links to commemorate the 150th Open.

The idea for The Big Bag Trail began when pupils from two St Andrews schools – Madras College and St Leonards –  were commissioned to design a Tour Bag that Callaway staff players would use at the 150th Championship.

To showcase the excellence of those designs, the sculptures of the final 10 were positioned in various locations around St Andrews, as The Big Bag Trail became a route from which locals and visitors could explore throughout the town, and proved to be a popular attraction for the record-breaking crowd of fans who flocked to attend this year’s Championship.

Following the conclusion of the event on July 17, which saw Aussie Cameron Smith become Champion Golfer of the Year, the sculptures were moved from their locations around the Home of Golf to the St Andrews Links Clubhouse where they were auctioned off by celebrity auctioneer Charlie Langhorn.

All proceeds from the auction will go to CHAS (Children’s Hospices Across Scotland) and Scottish Sports Futures (Changing Lives Through Sport).

Neil Howie, President and Managing Director, Callaway EMEA, said: “This has been a truly unique and wonderful project. Seeing the designs created by the young artists for the first time gave us a real sense that we were on the road to something special.

“But to see them come to life as these 10 beautiful sculptures, not forgetting Iona’s winning design that was made into the official bag used by our Staff Professionals during the 150th Open, has been an unforgettable experience.

“We’re delighted to have raised so much money for two such worthy causes, while also promoting the incredible community spirit that surrounds the Home of Golf.”

Kirsty McNab, CEO of Scottish Sports Futures said: “We’re delighted to have been involved in such an exciting and innovative project as the Big Bag Trail and would like to thank Callaway, St Andrews Links Trust and everyone else involved for raising an incredible amount of money that will make a real difference in people’s lives through the power of sport.”

Rami Okasha, CEO of CHAS, said: “When we first heard about the Big Bag Trail project we knew it was something unique and something that would capture the imagination of the public around The Open. We’re hugely grateful to Callaway and St Andrews Links Trust for their support in raising a significant amount of money which will greatly contribute to the work we do with children and families across Scotland ensuring no family faces the death of their child alone.”

The trail included the winning design by 17-year-old Iona Turner, whose creation titled ‘Nessie’s Round to Play’, was selected to be made into the official golf bag used by Callaway Staff Professionals competing at The 150th Open.

Iona’s design, which took inspiration from many of St Andrews’ iconic and recognisable landmarks, including the famous Swilcan Bridge on the 18th hole of The Old Course, was the most popular of the night, eventually leading to a final figure of £30,000.

Another design that proved popular at the auction was Lily Driscoll‘s 150 Opens, 1 St Andrews. Peter and Linda Wood from Woodside Lodges, St Andrews felt Lily’s design “Depicted St Andrews perfectly in both the colour scheme and the design” and were successful in outbidding other interested parties.

Neil Coulson, Chief Executive of St Andrews Links, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the public’s response to The Big Bag Trail, both in person from those who attended The Open, and online from those who couldn’t be with us last week.

“It was a remarkable build up to The 150th Open, a phenomenal event both on and off the course, and now to have raised so much money for these fantastic charities is the icing on the cake.”

Callaway Golf – Easy launch and serious distance with the new 2019 Big Bertha irons and hybrids

November 13, 2018 – Big Bertha is one of the most iconic names in golf equipment, designed to push the boundaries of innovation and performance, and today Callaway Golf has announced the latest addition to the Big Bertha Family, the new 2019 Big Bertha Irons and Hybrids featuring ground-breaking technologies to deliver faster ball speed and easy launch.

2019 BIG BERTHA IRONS

The Suspended Energy Core is the engine of the new Big Bertha Irons; a construction never before achieved in a golf club, and designed to deliver easy launch; long consistent distance; and incredible sound and feel.

It starts with a Metal Injection Molded (MIM’d) Tungsten Floating Weight suspended within Callaway’s proprietary Urethane Microsphere material. Suspending the floating weight allows the Centre of Gravity to be positioned deeper in the head, promoting higher launch.

Then a new thinner and faster 360 Face Cup, boasting a shallow, flexible rim around the perimeter of the face, perfectly combines with the high-launch characteristics fuelled from the Suspended Energy Core to deliver super-long ball flights.

A Smoked PVD Finish complements the clean Big Bertha Iron look, and new Super Soft/Light Recoil ESX graphite and KBS Max 90 steel shafts and Lamkin S5 Genesis Grips complete the high performance package.

Dr. Alan Hocknell, Head of Research and Development OF Callaway Golf, said: “Golfers can enjoy distance-enhancing launch conditions we’ve never been able to achieve before in a set of irons, that still remain very easy to hit. It is an unbelievable performance combination that has earned them the right to be called Big Bertha.”

2019 BIG BERTHA IRONS FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  • Easy launch and incredible sound and feel from the revolutionary Suspended Energy Core. This new construction suspends the Metal Injection Molded Tungsten weight using proprietary urethane microspheres.
  • Long consistent distance from the 360 Face Cup which employs a flexible rim around the face that flexes and releases at impact to increase ball speed. And by using the high launch angles generated by the Suspended Energy Core, we’re able to make our thinnest face cup for increased speeds that promote longer distance.
  • Premium Design: Unforgettable look with a clean, Smoked PVD Finish.
  • RRP: 1,299€ (Steel); 1,399€ (Graphite).
  • Availability: At retail across Europe from March 1, 2019.

2019 BIG BERTHA HYBRIDS

Big Bertha is the first Callaway hybrid to combine innovative Jailbreak Technology and adjustability for long distance, fast ball speeds, and easy launch. The synergy of Jailbreak, which incorporates two internal bars that stiffen the body to place more impact load on the face for fast ball speeds, and the Hyper Speed Face Cup promotes power and ball speed across the face for increased distance.

And to make it easy to launch, Callaway has introduced an entirely new OptiFit Hosel System that’s shorter and lighter, allowing their engineers to optimize the Centre of Gravity. The new progressive shape also makes it easy to hit, and new premium Recoil shafts add to an appealing design.

Available in 3H through to 8H, new progressive head shaping creates high MOI designs that are both appealing to look at and effortlessly forgiving.

2019 BIG BERTHA HYBRIDS FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  • Long distance and fast ball speeds from Jailbreak Technology: Jailbreak bars stiffen the body, placing more impact load on the face to promote fast ball speed and long distance.
  • Fast ball speeds from an ultra-thin face and Hyper Speed Face Cup: Carpenter 455 steel face, Jailbreak Technology and a Hyper Speed Face Cup combine to maintain high ball speeds across the face.
  • Easy launch from a new OptiFit Hosel: A new hosel system that is shorter and lighter to save weight. That weight is repositioned to optimise CG, for easy launch and high, long ball flight.
  • Easy to hit from new progressive shaping: Progressive head shape that is both forgiving and appealing, and packed with high MOI (resistance to twisting) technology.
  • Great feel and control from new premium shafts: Available in premium Recoil ESX and ZT9 shafts to provide excellent feel and control.
  • RRP: 299€.
  • Availability: At retail across Europe from March 1, 2019.

Callaway Golf – Striking new Mack Daddy 4 Tactical Wedges

September 13, 2018 – Callaway Golf yesterday announced the new Mack Daddy 4 Tactical Wedge, setting the standard for wedge performance by combining innovation technologies with premium components. It’s the finest collaboration yet between industry wedge legend Roger Cleveland and Callaway R&D, with heavy influence from Tour Players.

Visually striking with a new, standout military green ‘raw’ PVD finish, the overall ‘Tactical’ look is enhanced with a Black PVD Face, milled Black Medallions that affect CG placement, a black limited-edition True Temper Tour Issue 115 Shaft and Tactical Lamkin UTX Grip, with contrasting green detailing.

Featuring a more compact head shape, a straighter and tighter leading edge and slightly more offset, the Mack Daddy 4 Tactical Wedges are engineered from 8620 carbon steel to deliver maximum spin, control, and pure contact from tight lies, and employ the tried-and-tested Groove-in-Groove technology seen in standard MD4 Wedges.

Groove-in-Groove technology creates Micro-Positive surface roughness, milled into flat parts of the wedge face, featuring three raised micro-ridges, extending the length of the hitting area, with micro-grooves between the ridges that help grab the ball’s cover to significantly increase spin.

A 16-groove configuration includes an extra ‘Nip-It’ groove near the leading edge for added control, especially on short shots. All Mack Daddy 4 Tactical grooves are also 100% inspected with a digital stylus and special software to ensure the tightest tolerance within the rules of the game.

They are available in two grind options to enhance versatility, smooth turf interaction and solid feel:

  • S Grind: Medium-width sole with slight chamber at the back and moderate heel relief to keep the leading edge low through impact, promoting solid contact on open-faced shots. (10° bounce)
  • X Grind: The newest Callaway grind featuring a narrow, high-bounce crescent sole, with the low point near the front. Excellent for moderate-to-steep attack angles and medium-to-soft course conditions. (12° bounce)

Roger Cleveland commented: “Wedge design brings together many variables and we have carefully considered every element in the design in MD4 Tactical. Through a detailed and exhaustive process of working on look, shape, performance and feel we have created our most accomplished and distinct wedge ever.

Available in 16 loft-bounce combinations, including six lofts – 50°, 52°, 54°, 56°, 58° and 60° – MD4 Tactical Wedges are offered in both right and left hand options and will be available in stores across Europe from September 21st 2018.

RPP: 199€.

Callaway Golf – New XR Speed driver and fairway woods: Fast just got a whole lot faster

April 17, 2018 – Callaway Golf has introduced the all-new XR Speed Driver and Fairway Woods to its European line-up, the fastest, hottest and most forgiving XR range of products ever.

XR Metalwoods are already renowned for power-enhancing technologies that have helped golfers at every level hit longer shots.

Now Callaway has pushed XR performance even further with new X Face VFT Technology – the lightest and most flexible face it has ever designed – generating greater ball speeds and distance across a wider area of the face.

XR Speed is also the first XR Driver to feature an ultra-light Triaxial Carbon Crown (45% lighter than the XR 16 titanium crown) that improves the head’s mass properties to promote high launch and lower spin off the tee and increased MOI – the best formula for increased distance, accuracy and forgiveness.

Callaway’s R&D team has also enhanced the aerodynamics of XR Speed by improving its Speed Step Technology on the crown of the head, reducing air resistance and optimising clubhead speed.

Dr. Alan Hocknell, Senior Vice President, Research and Development at Callaway Golf, commented: “Our Jailbreak Technology made Epic the #1 selling Driver globally in 2017, and this year the new Rogue family of woods, also featuring Jailbreak, is off to an equally strong start.”

“We are however aware that drivers in the super-premium category aren’t accessible to every golfer. So our challenge with the new XR Speed was to deliver the best ‘non-Jailbreak’ driver possible, to sit in the premium category, that would still outperform competitor drivers, as well as give Epic and Rogue a run for their money.”

In addition, the new XR Speed Fairway Woods, in 3W, 4W, 5W and 7W, feature a new shallow head profile that enables golfers of all abilities the opportunity to get the ball airborne easier, quicker and more efficiently.

The inclusion of a refined Next-Gen Hyper Speed Face Cup optimises ball speeds across the entire face, promoting maximum distance. Yardage gains are then further enhanced through the aerodynamic efficiency of an improved Speed Step on the crown, which pushes clubhead speeds to levels way beyond XR 16 product lines.

WHAT TO KNOW – CALLAWAY XR SPEED DRIVER & FAIRWAY WOODS

  • XR Speed Driver and Fairway Woods will be available in stores across Europe from May 8th 2018.
  • XR Speed Driver (9º, 10.5º and 13.5º HT), are available right and left-handed. Ladies options, with a revised cosmetic, are available in 10.5° and 13.5° HT.

DRIVERS GUIDE 2018 – Choose your driver according to ‘your attitude to the game’

March 26, 2018 – Ready for the new season? Take a look at the new 2018 drivers that have just arrived in the golf shops, packed with breakthrough technological advances designed to help you, in amazing ways, to get your best score. Which one should you choose?

Until recently it was relatively easy to distinguish between customizable drivers and distance drivers, but now each brand offers adjustability in their models in both categories, and we could say that with a similar playability and performance in terms of low spin, forgiveness, ball speed and distance, it is difficult to distinguish for the amateur player. Therefore, it is not so much about your level of golf but more ‘your attitude to the game’: if you want to customize the driver to optimize the distance; or if you’d rather arrive, address and hit a good shot; or if you’d prefer to enjoy a premium high end driver.

Anyway, the best option is to have a personalized fitting, with accredited professionals, in a trustworthy golf shop or pro shop, because one of these drivers is sure to take your game from the tee to the next level.

Callaway Golf – Groove-in-Groove Technology sets standard for new Mack Daddy 4 wedges

January 10, 2018 – Callaway Golf has unveiled its Mack Daddy 4 Wedge line featuring an all-new proprietary Groove-In-Groove Technology that sets a new standard in shot-stopping spin and performance.

The Mack Daddy 4 line is the most rigorously tested and Tour-validated wedge family Callaway has ever produced, and represents the finest collaboration to date between wedge design legend, Roger Cleveland, Callaway’s in-house R&D experts, and its global team of Staff Professionals.

New Groove-In-Groove Technology combines a unique suite of features that provide incredible levels of spin and control:

  • The main grooves are horizontally milled and saw-cut to precise tolerances. In the lower lofts (52º and below) a 20D groove configuration has been used for consistent spin on fuller shots, while higher lofted wedges (54º and above) feature an aggressive 5D groove configuration for maximum control out of the rough and around the green
  • Each complete 16-groove face configuration also includes a new extra ‘Nip-It’ groove near the leading edge for added control, especially on shorter shots
  • In-between each main groove on the flat part of the face is a milled ‘Micro-Positive’ surface texture that features three raised micro-ridges, extending the length of the hitting area. Micro-grooves between the ridges then help grab the ball’s cover to increase spin significantly on a variety of shots
  • This combination of grooves and micro-grooves provides 84 different contact points to grab the cover of the golf ball

Roger Cleveland’s expertise working on Tour to refine shapes, soles, grinds and camber has led to a more compact shape, straighter leading edge, tighter leading-edge radius and slightly more offset, compared to Mack Daddy 3 Wedges. The tight radius makes it easy to make clean contact on tight lies for maximum spin and control.

“MD4 sets a new and higher standard in performance and appearance. Shape, feel, spin, control, versatility, finish and detailing have all been elevated to the highest level we’ve ever achieved,” commented Roger Cleveland.

The uniquely satisfying feel of MD4 Wedges comes courtesy of a soft 8620 carbon steel head (available in an elegant Platinum Chrome or non-glare Matte Black finish) and a four-port aluminum medallion weighting system that allows for the precise positioning of the CG in each head.

CG moves progressively upwards as loft increases, ensuring a solid shot and consistent trajectory at all times. Completing each wedge is a True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour-Issue 115 shaft and premium Lamkin UTx grip.

Available in 21 loft-bounce combinations, including nine lofts – 46º, 48º, 50º, 52º, 54º, 56º, 58º, 60º and 64º – MD4 is the most comprehensive Callaway Wedge line ever.

Also included in the four grind options to suit a variety of playing styles, attack angles and course conditions (adding to C, S and W Grinds) is an all-new X-Grind, which features a narrow, high-bounce (12º) crescent sole, which excels during moderate-to-steep angles of attack on medium-to-soft course conditions.

Three MD4 Wedges are available in a specific Women’s range in 52º, 56º and 60º lofts (all in W Grind) in an Aldila 50g Graphite shaft with a Lamkin Diamond grip.

MD4 Wedges will be in store from January 26, 2018.
