Srixon – Launch of the new Z-STAR golf ball range for 2015

January 27, 2015 – The company Srixon Sports Europe Ltd has announced the release of the new Srixon Z-STAR premium golf ball range, promising golfers long-hitting performance, increase spin around the greens and a ball that conquers the wind.

KEY FEATURES OF THE NEW SRIXON Z-STAR SERIES

1. The high initial velocity, high launch angle, and low spin create a powerful trajectory that conquers the wind, for longer distance, and are primarily achieved through two factors.

a) New 324 Speed Dimple Pattern: The new 324 Speed Dimple Pattern features a more uniform surface area for lower aerodynamic resistance. This results in even more airflow around the ball during flight, giving the Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV a powerful trajectory with longer distance.

b) New Energetic Gradient Growth (E.G.G.) Core: Designed in pursuit of high launch and low spin performance the new Srixon Z-STAR features a new super-soft E.G.G. large-diameter core. This affords golfers a greater contrast between the hard outer region and soft inner than the previous model, meaning higher launch angles and lower spin rates are produced from the tee, while crucially still maintaining the new Z-STAR’s soft feel.

In the new Srixon Z-STAR XV, a newly developed, high-resistance Ionomer ultra-thin mid-layer has been added. This increases mid-layer hardness, further improving the contrast between the hard outer and soft inner for high launch angles and low spin, resulting in a firmer feel and even more distance than the Z-STAR.

2. The newly developed coating and urethane cover deliver softer feel and stable spin performance. Srixon’s new Spin Skin coating is now 21% softer than the previous model. This, combined with the 7% softer ultra-thin, super-soft neo-urethane cover, gives golfers a 25% increase in interaction with clubface on impact than the previous model to offer a softer feel and consistent spin performance.

Review: Srixon Z 545 Driver

January 7, 2015 – The latest launch of drivers by Srixon in Europe, the new Z 545 model, has recently come into our hands and we’ve had the chance to review it on the golf course so that we can explain to you how it works. Before you read more, bear in mind that it’s a very elegant bomber, designed to improve your game, that you can seriously think about using to hit better off the tee this 2015.

At first glance it appears aggressive but sleek in terms of design. Beneath a white cover we discover a 460cc black head, with an advanced titanium cup-face construction which, according to references, amplifies a lot the sweet spot thus making it notably forgiving on off-centre hits. This look already inspires us with a good dose of confidence in the address.

In terms of innovation, the driver 545 Z features the Dual Speed Technology, patented by Srixon, whose mission is to maximize a player’s rotation efficiency in the swing, while delivering more kinetic energy at impact. In this way the faster clubhead increases your distance.

The Srixon Z 545 driver also comes with various mobile weights which are very simple and quick to change. The Quick Tune System of the brand provides a wide adjustability, using 24 individual settings that combine loft, lie, face angle and… watch this… centre of gravity! This comes standard with two weights of 7g and 3g already installed, and there is another 11g available, to tune the centre of gravity with precision in order to achieve the optimal launch and spin of your shots.

And the standard shaft mounted is the Mitsubishi Rayon Black Kuro Kage HBP 60. A configuration designed to provide a golf club with a performance defined by high speed and forgiveness, while promoting a mid-high launch.

We met Toni Alcázar, pro and director of El Doctor Golf in the driving range of CG Terramar, in Sitges (Barcelona, Spain), to do the test. Our Srixon Z 545 driver is a 10.5° with 3g in the centre and 7g in the rear, Neutral position, with a 60g Stiff shaft. And after hitting a dozen of golf balls he said:

  • At first I thought the club was a bit too light, but when I started to move it and make swings, I found the feeling of weight and club speed quite pleasant, with the clubhead in control at every moment.
  • I’d highlight that the Srixon 545 has many different shaft positions. Perhaps the amateur player should seek advice from a professional to assure that the setting suits and fix it. And in the case that his or her swing evolves, advice should be sought to reconfigure the club in the correct setting. If the player doesn’t understand what to do, he or she may get a bit lost.
  • About the performance, it’s a great club. I liked the feel a lot. What I enjoyed most is the feel of the clubhead. I really noticed that the head gave me a very good feeling.
  • It provides a mid to high flight trajectory, and hits very long. I also think that Srixon has been really successful with the combination of head and shaft. The Kuro Kage is a great shaft for this head.
  • In summary, it has surprised me a lot because at first it didn’t seem to me to be a very balanced club. However, I’ve been given a big surprise. It’s a club that I could put in my bag with no problem. It’s a driver that could be good for all players: Maybe not that much for high handicaps, but certainly for mid and low handicaps, and even for professional players… A great driver.

 Here we have a great driver for all players, with which you can print a good head speed, with a good feel on impact, to produce a fast ball with enough height, for forgiving and very long shots. Definitely, a sleek bomber in which you can trust.

  Nothing against. Getting advice and tuning it when making the purchase is a good thing for the player. Although if you are looking for a driver with a more penetrating trajectory, with even greater ability to work the ball, you will have to find other options for those players with greater skill off the tee.

Srixon – The World No1 amateur golfer Minjee Lee signs to play Srixon

Minjee-Lee-signs-Srixon-1December 19, 2014 – Srixon Sports has signed amateur golf sensation Minjee Lee for a multi-year contract.

The young Australian became the No1 ranked female amateur golfer in the world in February 2014, a position that was sustained until turning pro in September. Lee’s climb through the amateur ranks of the game saw her win notable titles including the 2012 U.S. Girls’ Junior and the Australian Women’s Amateur in 2013, before and successfully defending the latter title earlier this year.

Shortly after turning pro, the 18-year-old earned her 2015 US LPGA Tour card, having successfully finished as the co-medalist at the US LPGA Q-school this month.

After qualifying, Minjee Lee said: “Now that I’m officially part of the LPGA Tour I feel really good. I am relieved that I am finished and I am excited to play next year on the Tour.”

The agreement means Minjee Lee will now play Srixon golf balls, Srixon / XXIO clubs, wear a Srixon glove and headwear carrying the Srixon brand logo as well as a Srixon tour bag.

Srixon – Hideki Matsuyama wins Dunlop Phoenix with Z-STAR XV golf ball

November 25, 2014 – Srixon staff player Hideki Matsuyama has won the Dunlop Phoenix title in Japan this weekend, after triumphing in a sudden death playoff against compatriot Hiroshi Iwata.

On his way to a sixth victory on the Japan Tour, Matsuyama faced a strong challenge throughout from America’s Jordan Spieth, in what many in the game believe will be a regular sporting rivalry for many years to come.

Starting the final round with a two-shot lead, a round of one-under-par, after birdies at the final two holes in regulation play, proved to be enough to cement his spot in the playoff against Iwata, who shot a final round of 8-under-par to surge up the leaderboard.

Having finished his round off strongly, Hideki Matsuyama needed just one playoff hole to secure the win, wrapping up proceedings with a par. The win takes Matsuyama up to 16th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

October 13, 2014 – Last Friday 10th of October we were invited to experience the Short Game Masterclass that Dave Pelz, Srixon / Cleveland Golf ambassador, offered in London for the European media specialized in golf. This is the second time I’ve visited The Grove, one of England’s finest luxury golf courses, for a brand event, and I was excited to meet in person the golf master whose book “Putt Like the Pros” (Ediciones Tutor, 2005) I’d already read.

The American guru has dedicated the past 35 years to studying the game, discovering better ways to practice and play, and ten of his professional students have won a total of 19 majors. So many of us there were rather looking for a touch of his magic wand to piece together the puzzle of our putting and short game, and revealing the secrets of his method. But there are no miracle recipes. All it boils down to… ‘practice, practice and… practice’, although there Dave Pelz did show us the way.

In fact Dave, with 11 schools in USA and 6 in Europe (Killeen Castle in Dublin, St. Leon-Rot in Heidelberg, Quinta do Lago in Faro, PGA Catalunya Resort in Barcelona and The Grove in London), has been preparing a series of videos at his home in California for the ‘Pelz Corner’, his own section on the Cleveland Golf website, which demonstrates how to improve your golf following his tips, and with plenty of perseverance.

The programs in his schools usually last three days, so although we only had him for one morning… we learned a lot! For Dave Pelz the short game is the most important in golf because of its great influence on the card score. We use a wedge some 7 to 40 times each round, and if he thinks like that, it’s because in the end, “it’s more important where you putt from… that how well you putt.” That is, you will get better cards if you are able to leave the ball closest to the pin with a good short game, than if you are usually far away from the hole even if you are a master in putting.

Today, we want to control distance above all, which is the main problem of the short game. In this sense, the swing proportions are fundamental. According to Dave Pelz, a long backswing is not good for the short game, but rather a short backswing with a longer follow-through, which should be executed with a swing of extreme finesse.

Controlling the length of the backswing, Pelz distinguishes between three types of swing (7:30h, 9:00h and 10:30h if you take the players’ arms as the hands of a clock), all of which require consistency in the rhythm/effort through to the finish. He recommends four wedges: XW (64º), LW (60º), SW (55º) and PW (49º), which means that with The Pelz 3×4 System, these 3 different swings and the 4 wedges in your golf bag will give your short game 12 different distances of accuracy.

And as for putting, according to Pelz it’s the simplest motion to execute in golf, but yet the most difficult to learn, to do really well, and perhaps the most difficult to improve. And that’s because the difference between pros and amateurs in the percentage of holed 1-metre putts, whether handicap 10, 20 or even 30, is not that big. This difference will grow only slightly when you move away from the hole with putts of 3 and 6 metres. What happens is that the amateur ‘3-putts’ excessively.

The good news announced by our guru is that generally we already putt pretty well, and everyone can putt better. But the not-so-good news is that to move from good putting to great putting… is not that simple. We finished on the putting green near The Stables, enjoying a practice session with the Smart Square Cleveland Golf putter, which is distinguished by its original alignment system of double squares.

Well, on a sunny morning at The Grove there is something about which Dave Pelz has opened our eyes: he wants golfers to put more emphasis on ‘attitude’. The key factors that will let us reach our objectives in golf are: How much do you care about reaching them, how much are you going to practice, if you have easy access to the practice facilities, and how positive is your attitude. Srixon – Borja Virto sealed second title at Alps Tour Golf wining in Italy

September 7, 2014 – Spain’s Borja Virto sealed his second title of the season at the Alps Tour Golf wining the Open La Pinetina Memorial Giorgio Bordoni held in Italy. And he did it in a admirable way, as he holed three meters putt on last green to avoid a play-off.

Borja-Virto-2The Srixon-Cleveland Golf Spanish player scored 69 for -12 total and win with one shot margin over three players, Italy’s Federico Maccario, Spain’s Carlos Balmaseda and England’s Tom Shadbolt. It was a very tough day for the players last Friday.

Rain felt almost all day long and is was a real battle of nerves. After front nine, Borja Virto was already one shot clear of Molteni, Balmaseda and Shadbolt. He admitted it was hard because of his poor start with two bogeys. But the young Spaniard shown cold blood and stayed focus on his goal, and almost has secure his card for the Challenge Tour 2015.

“This win is maybe better than the one in Spain because I really had to go and catch it”, said Borja Virto, who played three years for Iowa State University. “I wanted to confirm my Alps Tour ranking and to be sure to play the Challenge Tour next year. I knew I could not get to the green on the last hole. When I saw this putt, the only thing I was able to think is -You have to hole it-.”

Like winning the Alps de las Castillas, the golfer from Navarre played with Srixon Z-STAR XV golf ball, Cleveland Golf Forged 588 MB irons (6-PW, KBS shaft) and 588 CB Forged irons (3-5, KBS), and Cleveland Golf RTX Chrome wedges (52º and 58º, True Temper Dynamic Gold S400) in his golf bag.

Srixon – Borja Virto, champion of Alps de las Castillas with Z-STAR XV golf ball

June 29, 2014 – Borja Virto, player of the Srixon – Cleveland Golf team in Spain, registered his first professional victory by winning the Alps de las Castillas, an event of the Alps Tour held in Los Angeles de San Rafael. The podium was completely dominated by Spanish golfers, all three of whom were equipped by Srixon and Cleveland Golf.

Borja Virto (Srixon) won with 8 under par and a total of 205 shots, beating his compatriots Borja Etchart (Srixon), second with 208 shots and, tied third place with 209 strokes, Diego Suazo (Cleveland Golf), Javier Colomo (TaylorMade Golf) and English Josh Loughery.

“I’m thrilled, I can’t believe it! Third time lucky! “, said Borja Virto after his victory. “It was a really tough day, complicated by the wind, playing under a lot of pressure and difficulty due to being in the main match, but I had already been in this situation twice before and finally things have come good.”

“I knew I was training well, but in your rookie season you go without expectations. I want to thank my father who has been my caddy this week, and has been very helpful.”

This year Borja Virto decided to take the step to become professional with the support of RFEG through its ProSpain Team program. So in his first professional season he has achieved victory with rounds of 68, 66 and 71 shots, playing with Srixon Z-STAR XV golf balls. “I’m very happy with the Srixon ball,” he added, “it gives me very good power with the driver, and the control I need when on the green.”

The golfer from Navarre also played with Cleveland Golf Forged 588 MB irons (6-PW, KBS shaft) and 588 CB Forged irons (3-5, KBS), and Cleveland Golf RTX Chrome wedges (52º and 58º, True Temper Dynamic Gold S400) in his golf bag. With this win, plus a second and a fourth place in the tour, Borja Virto jumps to the 5th place in the Order of Merit of the Alps Tour.
