PING – Tyrrell Hatton re-signs with his golf equipment brand

January 20, 2021 – Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, who has enjoyed a string of victories and high finishes worldwide in recent months, renewed his equipment contract with PING, the company announced today. Terms of the agreement were not released.

“You could hardly turn on a golf telecast over the past year-and-a-half and not see Tyrrell among the leaders, and on a few occasions, he’s been holding the trophy at the end,” said John K. Solheim, PING President.

“Tyrrell has won six times since 2016 and has climbed to 9th in the Official World Golf Ranking. He’s brought the success he achieved on the European Tour over to the states, where in March he earned his first PGA Tour victory on a big stage at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.”

“We appreciate his competitiveness and determination, and we’re proud to be associated with a truly international player who can compete with anyone, anywhere. His record of consistency proves that.”

In addition to his PGA Tour win, Hatton has five European Tour victories, most recently in October at that tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, where he gave the G425 LST driver its first title on its professional debut. The 29-year-old has had four top-10s at majors and was a member of the victorious Team Europe at the 2018 Ryder Cup. He is pleased to be continuing his years-long affiliation with PING.

“There’s a comfort level with the people at PING and with their clubs tee to green that gives me a lot reassurance and confidence that I’m always in a good position to play my best golf,” Tyrrell Hatton said.

“I have enjoyed working with PING for a number of years now, and the team know exactly what I need to compete at the highest level. I’m excited for the future knowing that I will continue to have PING as part of my team”.

PING – Introduction of G425 drivers, fairways, hybrids, irons and crossovers

January 11, 2021 – Continuing its commitment to bring golfers advancements in technology that lead to lower scores and more enjoyment on the golf course, PING today introduced the G425 family, a complete set of custom fit, custom built clubs engineered for golfers of all skill levels.

“We’re very excited to bring PING’s next generation of score-lowering custom fit, custom built equipment to golfers,” said PING President John K. Solheim. “Our engineering teams have made significant performance improvements in the G425 family which we are confident will appeal to long-time, loyal PING players while attracting other golfers looking to play better and enjoy the game more, including those brand new to the game. As is our engineering philosophy, we don’t introduce a new product unless it’s measurably better than its predecessor. The G425 family exceeds that standard in both performance and appearance.”

“The Tour response to the G425 driver has been exceptional,”John K. Solheim added. “It started with a win its first week on the European Tour in the hands of Tyrrell Hatton at the BMW PGA Championship and has continued with wins around the world ever since. Viktor Hovland claimed the Mayakoba Golf Classic in early December with the G425 LST and one week later the U.S. Women’s Open Champion also relied on the new driver. In all, the G425 driver already has six wins to its name, helping earn titles on all the major tours around the world. The players are instantly attracted to the clean, premium look of the clubs and even more impressed with the performance.”

PING G425 DRIVER: MOI to the MAX

In the G425 driver series, the primary model is named Max as it elevates the moment of inertia (MOI) to PING’s highest level in history and provide golfers the most forgiving driver in golf. Joining the G425 Max are the G425 LST (Low Spin Technology) and G425 SFT (Straight Flight Technology) to best match a golfer’s swing and launch conditions.

To achieve the new performance levels in the G425 Max (9º, 10.5º, 12º lofts), PING engineers combined key technologies from the G400 Max and G410 Plus. The resulting increase in MOI in the 460cc head comes mainly from a 26-gram tungsten movable weight, which is made possible by weight savings attributed to advancements in the driver’s Dragonfly crown technology. The weight can be positioned at distinctive settings over a smaller area than G410 Plus/LST to help shift the center of gravity lower and farther back without sacrificing performance elsewhere in the design. The CG-shifting weight can be secured in one of three settings — neutral, draw or fade — to influence forgiveness and shot shape for maximum performance. The average MOI increase is 14% across the three weight positions compared to the G410 Plus, with three combinations of weight position and loft exceeding a combined MOI of 10,000 (gm-cm²).

The G425 LST model (9º, 10.5º lofts) is designed with a pear-shaped head and measures 445cc to deliver spin reductions of approximately 200 rpm compared to the G410 LST and 500-700 rpm versus the G425 Max. The smaller head size of the LST employs a 17-gram CG shifter with three settings (Draw, Neutral, Fade) to fit the launch conditions best suited to the golfer’s swing and desired ball flight.

For golfers who commonly miss their tee shots to the right, the 460cc G425 SFT version (10.5º loft) is engineered with draw bias to help bring shots back on-line and into the fairway. It features a fixed 23-gram tungsten back weight that shifts the CG closer to the heel to promote a right-to-left shot bend of approximately 25 yards compared to the G425 Max model. A lighter swingweight (D1) also helps influence the ball flight correction.

To help contribute to increases in swing speed and ball speed, all three models share proven PING driver innovations, including turbulators for reduced aerodynamic drag and the proprietary T9S+ forged face to accelerate face flexing for more distance. An internal rib structure in the Ti-8-1-1 body improves acoustics for a solid and pleasing sound.  Each model also features the lightweight, 8-position hosel for loft (+-1.5º) and lie (up to 3º flatter) adjustments to further dial in ball flight.

  • RRP: G425 Drivers, 499€.

PING G425 FAIRWAYS ANS HYBRIDS: Big Advancements Mean Big Distance.

In the G425 fairway woods and hybrids, two shared PING innovations known as Facewrap Technology and Spinsistency combine to deliver more distance and spin predictability while offering numerous options to ensure proper gapping throughout a golfer’s bag.

With the Facewrap design, a thin, high-strength maraging steel face extends into the crown and sole to provide increased flexing for faster ball speeds that result in greater distance and high launching shots.

To bring more consistent spin performance, the faces of the fairway woods and hybrids are engineered with a complex face curvature that modifies the roll profile, mainly low on the face where the loft decreases approximately 2.5º to normalize spin and increase ball speed for more distance. Both player and PING Man robot testing revealed greatly improved distance results from Spinsistency, specifically low on the face, the most common miss-hit for fairway woods and hybrids.

A tungsten sole weight strategically positioned in each club increases the MOI in the stainless steel heads for added forgiveness. On the crown, a new 3-dot alignment feature provides golfers a visual cue to address the ball to best match their eye.

The G425 fairway woods are offered in Max 3W (14.5º), 5W (17.5º) 7W (20.5º), 9W (23.5º), LST (Low Spin) 3W (14.5º) and SFT (Straight Flight) 3W (16º), 5W (19º) and 7W (22)º options. The G425 hybrids are available in 2 (17º), 3 (19º), 4 (22º), 5 (26º), 6 (30º) and 7 (34º).

Both the fairway woods and hybrids are engineered with the lightweight, 8-position hosel for loft (+-1.5º) and lie (up to 3º flatter) adjustments to further dial in ball flight.

  • RRP: G425 Fairways, 349€.
  • RRP: G425 Hybrids, 289€.

PING G425 IRONS: More Distance. More Forgiveness.

In a departure from recent iron models, PING’s experts re-engineered the face of the G425 iron by employing a metal-wood-style, variable face thickness (VFT) design. This greatly increases flexing for measurable ball speed gains that launch shots higher and farther with the stopping power to hold greens – a rare result with most of today’s distance-minded irons.

In the process of creating the new face design, they developed a more compact head that sets a new standard for forgiveness for an iron its size. While shorter heel-to-toe than the G410 model, it boasts a 3% higher MOI due to mass savings from the new face geometry that have been re-allocated to the toe and hosel weights, which expands the perimeter weighting and greatly tightens dispersion.

Extensive finite element analysis was used to help develop a multi-material cavity badge that covers more of the face to damp undesirable frequencies and ensure a superb feel and pleasing sound.

The G425 irons feature a performance-improving, water-repelling hydropearl chrome finish and are available in 4-9, PW, UW, SW and LW in Standard, Power Spec and Retro Spec lofts. The grooves in the PW, UW, SW and LW are precision-milled to ensure control and touch into and around the green.

  • RRP: G425 Irons, 154€ (steel shaft) per club.
  • RRP: G425 Irons, 166€ (graphite shaft) per club.

PING G425 CROSSOVERS: New Finish. Better Results.

On the tee or off the ground, the G425 crossover is engineered to bring golfers gap-filling, long-iron-type performance by delivering more distance and green-finding forgiveness. The thinner face and internal geometry deliver the ball speeds to hit high-flying shots that land softly and closer to the hole. Forgiveness is supplied by the toe and hosel weights that expand the perimeter weighting to increase the MOI. It is further distinguished by its functional and resilient stealth hydropearl finish that helps repel moisture and improve performance from all conditions. Available in 2 (18º), 3 (20º) and 4 (22.5º).

  • RRP: G425 Crossovers, 259€.

ALTA CB Slate Shaft

The PING ALTA CB Slate (SR, R, S, X) is the standard shaft in the G425 Driver, Fairway Woods, Hybrids and Crossover. Continuing PING’s belief in counter-balanced technology, it is engineered with an 8-gram plug in the end of the shaft to deliver more momentum and forgiveness. In the G425 iron, the AWT 2.0 is the stock steel shaft and the ALTA CB Slate is the stock graphite option.

Arccos Caddie Smart Grip Program

The Arccos Caddie Smart Grip (Golf Pride Lite 360 Tour Velvet) in one of four sizes (Red -1/32”, Aqua -1/64”, White/Std, and Gold +1/32”) is the standard grip on all G425 clubs. Golfers who purchase a set of five or more G425 irons in one transaction are entitled to eight free Arccos Screw-In sensors and a 90-day free trial of the Arccos Caddie App. Golfers who purchase one or more G425 driver, fairway wood, hybrid or Crossover are eligible for 14 free Arccos Screw-In sensors and the 90-day app free trial for a $19.99 shipping and handling fee.

PING – John Clark to step down as Ping Europe Managing Director after 24 years at the helm

December 1, 2020 – Long-serving Ping Europe Managing Director, John Clark, will step down from his role at the end of this year, with current General Manager, Lisa Lovatt, taking up the position.

Lovatt, 51, will begin her new role on 1st January 2021, with full responsibility for all of Ping Europe’s operations in Gainsborough, Cheadle and the four PING offices in Europe. She will report directly to PING Chairman and CEO, John Solheim.

Clark, 64, who has worked at Ping Europe for 26 years – 24 of these as Managing Director – will retain some small responsibilities at the company on a part-time basis and will also continue as a board member of both Ping Europe and Ping in the USA.

“This management transition isn’t a sudden decision, in fact, it is something we have been working towards for the last two or three years,” commented John Clark. “The appointment of Lisa as General Manager in 2018 was the first step, and her success in that role means she is ready to lead this new phase of our future.”

Lovatt joined Ping Europe in 1994 to lead the company’s apparel and soft goods division. She transitioned into operations and was responsible for developing operational support services over a long period of sustained expansion. This included responsibility for purchasing, customer services, production, warehousing and shipping, and her success in this multi-faceted role led to her being appointed General Manager in early 2018.

“I am delighted to be taking up this new role and look forward to building on the incredible work that John and the team have carried out over the 24 years of his tenure,” said Lisa Lovatt. “I’ve been working for Ping Europe for over 26 years and I’m excited about driving the company forward in 2021 and beyond.

“I’d like to thank John sincerely, on behalf of everyone at Ping Europe, for the tireless service that he has given to the company over the years, and hope he enjoys the extra time that he will now have available to spend with his family and friends.”

Speaking about his reasons for stepping down, John Clark added: “The reason for my retirement is family. I have always been a workaholic and have woken every morning loving going to work. The challenge of being a significant part of a successful company has served as my motivation all through my working career.

“However, far too often, this has been at the expense of family commitment from me and I now want to devote more time to my wife, two sons, three amazing grandsons and a granddaughter who is due early next year.”

Adding his thanks to PING founders, the Solheim family, Clark continued: “Their principles, caring for people and long-term thinking, run right through every PING business. It is a culture I have been well suited to and I owe them more than I could ever put into words.

“I am handing over to Lisa with a feeling of immense pride and satisfaction in what we have achieved since I joined way back in 1994. This year has been incredibly challenging, but golf has bounced back strongly. We have great product coming next year, so the stage is set for Lisa and her team to have a fantastic year in 2021.”

PING – A ‘lifetime’ contract for Bubba Watson

November, 2020 – PING announced today that two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson has signed a “lifetime” contract to represent the company. Terms of the agreement were not released, but PING confirmed the contract extends the relationship well past Watson’s expected PGA Tour career.

“We’re extremely excited to make this announcement,” said John K. Solheim, PING President. “We understand it is unique in the sports endorsement world, but so is Bubba. He’s done a lot for PING over his amazing career and we felt the time was right to make this commitment to him. His skill level and creativity on the golf course have defined his career, but his generosity and compassion are what make him a great fit for PING. He’s like family to us and we’re very happy he’ll be with us for the rest of his golf career.”

Watson, who is celebrating his 42nd birthday this week, is preparing for his 12th Masters and coming off top-10 finishes in his last two events since switching to the new PING G425 driver and 3-wood.

“I’ve been playing PING equipment since I was a kid,” said Bubba Watson. “So basically, my whole life. I love the company and truly believe PING is committed to making the best equipment. I can’t thank the Solheim family enough for their support during my career. PING and the Solheim family have played a huge role in my golf career and my life. I’m very grateful they’ve put their faith in me to represent them for the rest of my career.”

Watson, whose first putter was a PING B60, has played PING clubs continuously since receiving a junior set of PING irons as an 8-year-old. He was first brought to PING’s attention by the late Billy Weir, PING’s longtime sales representative in Georgia and North Florida. A lifetime honorary member of the Georgia Section PGA, Weir retired in Watson’s hometown, where he frequently played golf with a young Watson.

As he watched Watson begin winning junior events around the Florida Panhandle, he saw something special in the long-hitting left-hander. He passed his observations on to PING Chairman & CEO John A. Solheim, who also was intrigued by Bubba’s game and encouraged Weir to provide the allowable support to help Bubba further develop his game.

“I remember my great friend Billy Weir telling me about Bubba and how he had a gift to play the game like few he’d ever seen. He was not only a long hitter, he played with creativity and passion,” John A. Solheim said.

“He really stood out. I first met him when he was 13 and we’ve since developed a very close friendship. He reminds me of my father Karsten in a lot of ways. Bubba is a very creative thinker who does things his own way – especially in the way he thinks about marketing. His idea to play a pink shaft and pink clubhead is just one example of his creativity, which led to us partnering with him in raising more than $250,000 for the Phoenix Children’s Hospital.”

Watson played two years at Faulkner State Community College and two years at the University of Georgia before turning professional in 2001. He signed his first contract with PING shortly after turning professional and went on to play the Nationwide Tour (Korn Ferry today) before earning his PGA Tour card at the end of 2005. During his 14-year PGA Tour career he’s won 12 times, including two Masters titles, and he has led the PGA Tour driving distance statistic five times.

“I remember signing my first contract with PING and thinking how blessed I was to be representing such an amazing company that treated me like family,” Bubba Watson said.

“Without PING’s support I do not know if I would have achieved my dream of playing golf for a living. I’m proud to have the PING name on my bag when I’m competing on the PGA Tour. Like I said when I won my first Masters, ‘I never got this far in my dreams.’ Being with PING for the rest of my career makes it even more special.”

PING – More distance and forgiveness with the G710 iron with Arccos Smart Grips

January 20, 2020 – In the new G710 irons, PING engineers deliver golfers more distance and forgiveness in a sleek, dark finish, PING President John K. Solheim announced today. The new irons are available for custom fitting and pre-order at authorised PING golf shops around the world beginning today.

“The G710 iron is our longest, most forgiving iron to date. It’s engineered for golfers who want to maximise both distance and forgiveness,” John K. Solheim said. “In designing it, we also advanced other important attributes such as consistency, sound and feel, without sacrificing performance. The hydropearl stealth chrome finish gives it a very sleek and attractive look. It’s a beautiful, high-performance design that will have broad appeal for golfers who want to hit the ball longer and straighter.”

Solheim also announced the new G710 irons come standard with Arccos Smart Grips and a free trial of the Arccos Caddie app. “I personally started using Arccos more than a year ago and have seen significant improvement across my entire game,” he said. “It helps me during a round with club selection and I really enjoy analysing all the data after the round to uncover areas to help me play better. The Arccos Caddie app is a tremendous shot-tracking tool to help golfers lower their scores and have more fun on the course.”.

Precision Machined, Maraging Steel Face

One of the strongest aerospace-grade alloys in the world, maraging steel provides strength and flexibility for launching shots higher and further. High durability coupled with a machined variable-thickness face make an ideal pairing for distance.

“We’ve continued to employ maraging steel in several products where maximising face flexing is a performance priority,” said John K. Solheim. “Our engineers have optimised the bending of the G710 face to increase ball speeds for more distance and higher trajectories, producing shots that land softer and hold the green. It’s a distance iron that delivers consistent distance, a very rare combination for an iron of this type.”

5% Higher MOI

High-density tungsten toe and heel weights optimally positioned in the 17-4 stainless body increase the MOI by 5% compared to the G700, producing exceptional forgiveness for more distance and accuracy, especially for mid-to-high handicaps and slower swing speeds.

“Forgiveness continues to be at the top of our list when it comes to iron design,” John K. Solheim said. “In a hollow-body design, our goal is to balance a variety of attributes to help golfers hit the ball significantly further while hitting more greens. The G710 iron’s extremely high MOI is a result of strategically positioning weight on the toe and inside the hosel to make it our most forgiving iron. We’ve also greatly enhanced the feel and sound through extensive modal analysis, which helped us eliminate certain undesirable frequencies.”

Hydropearl Stealth Chrome Finish

A hydropearl chrome finish with black PVD coating provides hydrophobicity to repel water and improve performance through the turf and in wet conditions. The two-stage coating process ensures durability and the darker finish creates the perception of a smaller, more compact head.

Alta Distanza Black 40 Graphite Shaft

The proprietary PING shaft is a no-upcharge option in the G710 iron and offers the lightest weight and max trajectory height available in a PING iron shaft. A more active tip in the 42-gram shaft delivers higher trajectories and best matches golfers with slower swing speeds.

Arccos Smart Grip & Caddie app

The Arccos Golf Pride 360 Tour Velvet Smart Grip is standard on every G710 iron in one of three sizes (Aqua -1/64″, White Std., Gold +1/32″). Each iron is custom built with an embedded sensor in the grip to automatically record and analyse every shot taken during a round when paired with the Arccos Caddie app. Golfers receive a 90-day free trial of the app and eight additional screw-in sensors at no charge after the purchase of six or more G710 irons. Fulfillment of the additional free sensors comes directly from PING and requires users to first download the Arccos Caddie app.

PING – New Heppler putter line with solid-face and high inertia properties

January 20, 2020 – Employing high-pressure aluminium casting for the first time in the manufacturing of its putters, PING today introduced the Heppler putters, an eye-catching, nine-model family of blades and multi-material mid-mallets and mallets differentiated by solid- face technology and extremely high inertia properties. The custom-fit putters are available for pre-order at authorised PING golf shops around the world beginning today.

“With the Heppler series, we’re providing golfers a firmer-feeling putter in highly forgiving models to ensure a choice that fits their stroke and eye,” said John K. Solheim, PING President.

“We’ve chosen a very precise manufacturing process that has significantly advanced our ability to create high-MOI mid-mallets and mallets by combining aerospace-grade aluminium with steel. The contrasting copper and black finish provides alignment cues and a visually appealing, premium look that’s attracting a lot of interest on tour”.

“Fitting continues to be an important part of our putter technology as well,” Solheim said. “We’ve made improvements to the feel of our adjustable-length shaft technology and the new putters are available to fit every stroke type so golfers can find a putter to match their stance and stroke.”

Solid-Face Technology

A firmer feel and sound is the result of the machined, flat face. The face material – either aluminium or steel – varies by model, depending on the placement of the materials, which is strategically positioned to maximise forgiveness and optimise the centre of gravity.

Extensive testing revealed the auditory feedback of the flat metal face had a positive effect on the player’s confidence by providing a distinct impact experience, without compromising performance.

““We saw a high percentage of testers improve their ‘Strokes Gained’ results with a Heppler model, indicating that many golfers prefer the firmer sound and feel of a solid-face design,” said John K. Solheim. “We see the new putters as an appealing alternative to our Sigma 2 series, which offers a softer feel and sound through its dual-durometer insert and TR face technology. Our primary goal is to provide golfers a custom-fit putter with their desired feel and sound, while delivering the performance and consistency they need to hole more putts.”.

Pressure-Cast Aluminium; Multi-material Designs

PING engineers combined a lightweight aluminium with steel through strategic shaping and weight placement to produce extremely high MOI designs. The aluminium casting process creates precise detail and exceptional quality in the mid-mallets and mallets. The new Tomcat 14 has the highest MOI in the line and features a 14-dot alignment aid inspired by the lights on an airport runway.

“The advantage of pressure casting is we can achieve highly precise design details, while allowing our engineers much greater freedom to position weight where it benefits the putter’s performance the most,” said John K. Solheim. “As a result, we improved the performance of existing models and developed two entirely new designs. Golfers will also find a variety of alignment features to help ensure accuracy and match their preferred look.”.

Black Chrome, Adjustable-Length Shaft

Advancements to the adjustable-length shaft technology introduced in the Sigma 2 family produce a firmer feel with less flexing. Finished in an eye-catching black chrome, the adjustable-length shaft is lightweight, easy to use and sleekly concealed beneath the grip, allowing golfers to customise length between 32″ and 36″ to fit their stroke and posture. The process is quick and intuitive, through the use of an adjustment tool that inserts into the top of the grip. One full turn causes approximately a ¼” adjustment up or down and the grip remains perfectly aligned during the adjustment process.

“We’ve taken a very complex technical challenge and simplified it for the benefit of golfers,” said John K. Solheim. “It allows you to experiment with various lengths and ultimately fit yourself. You simply adjust it until you’re comfortable, ideally with your eyes directly over the ball, or slightly inside the line. The performance improvements with a putter fit to the proper length are significant. We strongly encourage golfers to take advantage of this innovative feature.”

Four PING grip designs allow golfers to find their optimal fit and feel. The PP59 is the standard grip, inspired by the popular PP58. The PP60 is midsize and lightweight, designed to fit the contours of the hands with flats on the top and sides. Slightly heavier, the PP61 has an exaggerated pistol shape. The PP62, while still lightweight, has a larger, more rounded shape to promote quieter hands.

THE NAME HEPPLER PAUS TRIBUTE TO LONG-TIME EMPLOYEE

The new putter family is named in honour of Rick Heppler, a long-time PING employee who began his career with the company as a teenager in 1966. The son of a General Electric co-worker of PING Founder Karsten Solheim, Rick was hired by Karsten to help John A. Solheim build putters in the family garage. Rick eventually held several management positions at Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, before passing away in a motorcycle accident in 2013.

“Rick was part of the PING family for almost 50 years,” said John K. Solheim. “He was a dear friend who contributed greatly to our success in all that he did. Naming this putter series after him is a tribute to his dedication to our company and its employees.”

The PING Heppler putter models (RRP) available are Anser 2 (299€), ZB3 (299€), Piper C (299€), Tyne 3 (329€), Fetch (329€), Ketsch (329€), Floki (329€), Tomcat 14 (329€) and Piper Armlock (329€).

PING – Introduction of the new Glide 3.0 wedges with higher spin, more forgiving and lighter

July 16, 2019 – In developing the new Glide 3.0 wedges, PING’s engineers took a grip-to-grind approach, re-designing every component of the club to create a higher-spinning, more forgiving, lighter overall design that offers multiple sole grind options to custom-fit golfers of all skill levels.

The tour-proven Glide 3.0 wedges are available for custom fitting and pre-order beginning today at authorised PING golf shops around the world.

“In the Glide 3.0 series, we’re broadening the appeal of our wedges and providing more differentiation within our own line and the rest of the marketplace,” said John K. Solheim, PING President. “We approached the design with a goal of creating higher-spinning, great-looking wedges that also deliver more forgiveness with the improved feel from our other proven technologies. Every detail in the Glide 3.0 is designed to improve short-game performance, from the longer grip for choking down to the Hydropearl 2.0 chrome finish that helps the wedge glide through the grass.”

“From a fitting standpoint, we engineered four distinctly different sole grinds, including an Eye2 sand-wedge-inspired option, to ensure that trained PING club fitters can properly match a Glide 3.0 to a golfer’s swing and playing conditions,” Solheim said. “We’re excited about getting it into golfers’ hands. It had a win its first week on the PGA Tour when Nate Lashley used one in his amazing and inspiring victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.”

IMPROVED FEEL AND FORGIVENESS

In the Glide 3.0 wedges, PING’s engineers put a premium on the feel and forgiveness by leveraging the multi-material construction that combines a 431 stainless steel head with a larger and softer elastomer Custom Tuning Port (CTP) insert. Similar to the popular i210 irons, the additional volume of the CTP allows for a larger insert covering more of the back of the face, resulting in activation of the elastomer at impact to produce a soft yet solid feel. The new, patented cavity design and larger CTP expand the perimeter weighting to increase the MOI and position the centre of gravity higher to yield lower-launching, higher-spinning trajectories for more control.

“The Glide 3.0 wedge is a great blend of a players-style design and game-improvement technology,” said John K. Solheim. “At address, it provides the clean look of a tour-style wedge. We’ve added some offset based on tour player feedback to provide a more captured look. At the same time, we’ve increased the perimeter weighting and improved the feel with the softer insert material to ensure golfers have the forgiveness they need to play with confidence on approach shots. The combination of those attributes really sets the Glide 3.0 wedges apart and gives them a much broader appeal.”

PRECISION-MILLED GROOVES

Patented wheel-cut grooves developed by PING’s engineering and manufacturing teams enable grooves with a sharper edge radius, which increases interaction with the ball at impact, creating more friction for improved spin and trajectory control. The grooves in the lower-lofted wedges (46°, 50° & 52°) are milled with a 20° sidewall and a .005″ edge radius for optimal full-shot performance. The higher-lofted versions (54°, 56°, 58° & 60°) feature an extra ½ groove at the bottom of the face for added spin and are milled to a .004″ edge radius with a 28° sidewall to impart more spin, especially around the greens.

A FOCUS ON FITTING

With an emphasis on expanding the wedge sole options to better custom-fit golfers, PING engineers crafted four differentiated sole grinds in the Glide 3.0 series. Each is designed to best match a player’s angle of attack and typical turf conditions while providing performance and versatility on full and partial shots around the green.

“We see tremendous opportunity in wedge fitting in general,” said John K. Solheim. “It starts by focusing our product designs on meeting the needs of golfers of all abilities and swings. With the new sole grinds and multiple loft options, a fitter can really dial in the wedges to help improve the player’s performance based on how they dynamically deliver the clubhead and the type of conditions they typically play in. During the process, they can also determine the best combination of wedges to provide proper distance gaps between each club.”

GRIND OPTIONS

  • Standard Sole (SS) grind (46°/12°, 50°/12°, 52°/12°, 54°/12°, 56°/12°, 58°/10°, 60º/10°). Mid-bounce sole with heel relief. Engineered for golfers with a moderate angle of attack. Exceptional performance in a variety of turf and sand conditions. Fits most golfers.
  • Wide Sole (WS) grind (54°/14°, 56°/14°, 58°/14°, 60º/14°). Most forgiving through the ground. Round and cambered sole with significant bounce. Recommended for golfers with a steep angle of attack who typically play in soft turf and sand conditions.
  • Eye2 grind (54°/10°, 56°/10°, 58°/8°, 60°/8°). With the high toe design pioneered by Karsten Solheim nearly 40 years ago, it matches the original Eye2 SW sole/face profiles and narrow hosel transition for the ultimate in bunker performance and touch shots near the green.
  • Thin Sole (TS) grind (58°/6°, 60°/6°). Facilitates precise shot-making and versatility from tight lies. Extreme heel relief with PING WRX-inspired bounce grind. Ideal for firm conditions and a shallow angle of attack.

LIGHTER SHAFT AND GRIP

The Glide 3.0 wedge’s grip and shaft have been lightened by six and five grams, respectively, contributing to an overall weight reduction of 15 grams for the entire club. The Dyla-wedge Lite grip, which is ¾-inch longer than a traditional grip and features a reduced taper, allows golfers to choke down for more versatility and trajectory control. The PING Z-Z115 wedge shaft is made by Nippon and custom engineered with a lower balance point closer to the tip to provide lower launch with more control and enhanced feel.

“The lighter overall weight allows the Glide 3.0 to better blend into a golfer’s full set and help them swing the club easier,” said John K. Solheim. “We’ve also reduced the head weight by approximately four grams while maintaining our traditional wedge swing weights to ensure golfers still benefit from the clubhead feel they need to play with control and precision.”

PING – Introduction of G Le2, the next generation of custom-fit women’s golf equipment

July 2, 2019 – Advancements in technology, lighter overall club weight, expanded fitting options and premium materials combine to make the new G Le2 family PING’s highest performing women’s clubs to date, the company announced. The complete line of clubs is available at authorised PING golf shops from 18th July and for pre-order around the world beginning today.

“The G Le2 represents our continued commitment to providing women golfers of every skill level with premium, high-performance equipment optimised to their swing speeds,” said Stacey Pauwels, PING Executive Vice President and the granddaughter of PING founders Karsten and Louise Solheim, whose role includes overseeing the brand’s women’s initiatives.

“To achieve one of our performance goals of improving the feel of the club throughout the entire swing, we focused on making the clubs lighter overall. We integrated our extensive knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes with our proven design technologies to deliver measurable improvements throughout the set. At the same time, we wanted to present the new clubs in a visually appealing and confidence-inspiring way. We’re extremely excited about the results and look forward to bringing the G Le2 family to women golfers around the world.”

Custom fit and custom built

Along with ensuring measurable performance improvements throughout the G Le2 family, PING’s engineering team placed added importance on expanding the fitting options to help women find the ideal set to match their games.

“Having equipment that is custom fitted to their games allows women to see improvement from every club in their bag,” said Stacey Pauwels. “The G Le2 family really emphasises that need through loft, lie and length adjustability, along with the shaft weight, flex and grip offerings. Once we know those specifications, finding the best combination of fairway woods, hybrids, irons and wedges during a fitting is the next step in the process. Because we custom build every club, we want women to know we’ll make them a set that best fits their game. The key is determining the ideal set make up that provides proper distance gaps between each club. That may be a full set, or maybe a smaller set of a few metal woods, hybrids, irons, a wedge and a putter. Once we have all their fitting information, we can custom build the clubs to their precise specifications for maximum performance.”
