March 19, 2022 – As part of a year-long celebration acknowledging the issuance of the Anser putter patent 55 years ago, PING announced the availability of the Anser Patent 55 putters to be sold exclusively through pingpld.com beginning Monday 21st of March. Only 55 of the precision-milled, handcrafted putters, which are made in the USA, will be available via the new website launched last week.
The first of four Anser Patent 55 designs to be released this year as part of the new Putting Lab Design (PLD) Limited collection, the fully machined aluminum bronze putter can be purchased for $790. (Limit one per customer.)
Granted on March 21,1967 by the U.S. Patent office and assigned the number D207-227, the game-changing patent set the standard in putter design that still dominates the winner’s circle today. More than 700 Anser victories are represented in the PING Gold Putter Vault, including the 1969 Masters, the first of 20 major victories for PING’s most iconic design.
The history of the famous design is well-chronicled, from it first being sketched by Karsten Solheim on a 78-rpm record sleeve to his wife Louise’s idea to name the putter Anser, cleverly suggesting Karsten leave out the letter “w” in the word answer to ensure the name would fit on the back of the putter. Earning its first PGA Tour win at the 1966 Florida Citrus Open, just over a month after its introduction at the Phoenix Open, the Anser’s instant popularity changed the trajectory of the company practically overnight as demand grew so quickly it necessitated a move out of the family’s Scottsdale garage and into a small building in north Phoenix to keep up with production. The original building still sits on the company’s 50-acre facility.
The Anser is also famous for its influence on other putter designers in the golf industry, many of whom celebrated the day the patent expired.
“A lot of time has passed since the invention of the Anser putter,” said John A. Solheim, PING’s Chairman & CEO and the youngest son of Karsten and Louise Solheim.
“We think it’s important to remind the golf industry and some of the younger golfers that the familiar putter design they see with other brands’ name on it was created by Karsten in his garage in the mid-1960s. I was fortunate to be at his side building the first Ansers and continued to do so for many years. It was among Karsten’s many contributions to the game that eventually earned him induction into the World Golf of Fame, the only manufacturer to be so honored. We’re flattered that the design has had such a significant influence on putter design for the last 55 years and we think this a great time to celebrate its continuing success by offering golfers a piece of PING history with the introduction of the Anser Patent 55 model.”
With only a few opportunities a year, PLD Limited models consist of putters played by top PING professionals, and iconic PING putters that changed the game. Targeted mainly to collectors, these models will be serialized and available as built with no modifications.
The next Anser Patent 55 will be machined from stainless steel and will launch on June 13, followed by a patina-finished carbon steel version on September 26. The final Anser Patent 55 is milled from stainless steel with a yet-to-be determined finish and is available on December 12.
March 8, 2022 – Custom-engineered to offer milled putter performance, PING has launched four tour-validated models in a series of Putting Lab Design (PLD) putters. The precision-milled putters are now available for pre-order at authorised PING retailers committed to selling premium, custom fit putters.
The PLD Milled line offers a collection of four tour-validated models, each with a history of winning championships. These designs are fully machined from forged, 303 stainless steel and represent a combination of standard-setting favourites like the Anser and newer, Tour-inspired models like the DS72, the choice of multiple-time winner Viktor Hovland. Each model requires more than four hours of milling time, precisely shaping every surface and radius to achieve the high quality and premium look expected in a precision-milled putter.
“The PLD Milled is an exciting addition to our putter line,” said John K. February 8, 2022 – Significant distance gains combined with improved feel and sound in a players-distance model distinguish the new PING i525 irons, according to PING President John K. Solheim, who today officially introduced the newest entry into PING’s extensive iron lineup. The custom-built i525 irons are now available for custom fittings at authorised PING retailers around the world.
“What’s most satisfying in the i525 iron from an engineering standpoint is how our team has been able to maximise the flexing of the metal-wood-style face structure while creating a pleasing sound and feel,” said John K. Solheim.
“As golfers know who’ve played this type of iron design, they often sacrificed some of the feel for more distance. That’s not the case in the i525 as we’re able to provide golfers a solid-feeling iron with the increased ball speed they need to hit longer, higher shots that hit and hold the green. We’re seeing some incredible results as a lot of golfers are a club stronger or more, including Tour pros who are attracted to the compact look and increased ball speed of the longer irons.”
Forged, Maraging-Steel Face
The strength of the variable-thickness, maraging steel allows for a thinner, more dynamic face structure with an internal sole undercut in the 17-4 stainless steel body to increase flexing for more ball speed and shots that launch faster and higher with distance control.
“As we advance all of our iron technologies through our continuous research and knowledge development, it’s important for golfers to understand the different attributes engineered into each model,” said John K. Solheim.

Sound Engineering
A polymer is precisely injected onto the inside of the face to improve feel and sound without interfering with face deflection, the source of its increased ball speed.
“One of the biggest challenges we face in designing all clubs is tuning the feel and sound,” said John K. Solheim.
“Because of the i525’s metal-wood-style face design, we knew sound would require additional attention to ensure the gains in distance didn’t come at the expense of the feel. We couldn’t sacrifice one attribute just to improve another. The solution was to inject the polymer in precise amounts to the same area behind the face. The result is a significant improvement in distance, sound and feel.”
Extreme Weighting
Tungsten toe and shaft tip weights combine with a tiered, dynamic face structure and cavity to expand the perimeter weighting while preserving ball speed through greater face deflection for added distance and improved accuracy. The moment of inertia has increased in the vertical and horizontal axes to provide tighter dispersion and increased forgiveness.
“The structure of the face and cavity is a significant mechanical-engineering accomplishment,”John K. Solheim said.
“They function as one to ensure golfers benefit from the forgiveness PING irons are famous for while maintaining consistent bending across the face to deliver the added ball speed and higher launch that golfers expect in a distance-focused iron.”
Friction Face with MicroMax Milled Grooves
Introduced last year in the i59 iron, the i525’s precision-machined face has MicroMax grooves for tighter spacing and a geometry that results in an average of four extra grooves on each club to reduce fliers in the short irons and preserve spin in the long irons for greater control and consistency.
January 30, 2022 – Viktor Hovland won his first Rolex Series title as he completed a sensational finish with a play-off victory over Richard Bland at the 2022 Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic.
The Norwegian was barely in the picture when he missed a short putt and made a bogey on the 15th but he finished birdie-eagle-birdie to sign for a 66 and post the target at 12 under.
Bland joined him in the clubhouse with a birdie-birdie finish of his own in a 68, with two-time champion Rory McIlroy finding water on the last to fall out of the play-off.
Hovland made a two-putt birdie on the first trip back up the 18th and when Bland failed to get up and down after finding a tricky lie with his second, it was the 24-year-old who was left holding the Dallah trophy at Emirates Golf Club.
Hovland becomes the first Norwegian to win a Rolex Series event and adds this title to his maiden DP World Tour victory at the 2021 BMW International Open.
It is his third win in five starts after back-to-back victories in November and December at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba and Hero World Challenge, and could move him up to third in the Official World Golf Ranking.
“This is pretty wild. I didn’t really think this was possible going in today. I knew I had to shoot a really low number but a lot of things had to go my way and thankful that it did.
“I was fuming after the three-putt on 15 and thought that was it. I knew I just had to try to finish off well and get a nice position for the week. I rolled a really long one on 16, and then on 17, and hey, we got a shot.
“I’m pumping right now. It’s a little bit surreal, and it’s hard to kind of calm yourself a little bit but you’ve just got to rely on all the shots that you hit and just go back to what you know,” said Viktor Hovland.

Tour-Inspired Compact Shape
In consultation with its Tour staff and brand ambassadors, PING’s engineers designed the Glide Forged Pro for golfers who focus on saving shots into and around the green. The smaller heel-to-toe head, which is forged from 8620 carbon steel, creates a captured look at address, giving players the confidence to manipulate the head to help execute any shot they are facing.
“We know golfers are very particular about the look of their wedges. That first impression when they look down at it is vitally important to whether it makes it into their bag,” said John K. Solheim.
“The feedback from our players and coaches really helped guide the design of the Glide Forged Pro. It sets up perfectly behind the ball, giving you the confidence to pull off almost any shot. It has the all-around performance that will lead to lower scores for a lot of different type of players.”
Friction Face with Emery Blast
In combination with the precision-milled face and grooves, the new Emery face blast adds more texture to the hitting surface, creating higher friction and more interaction between the club and ball for more spin and lower launch. The 50º and 52º lofts feature wheel-cut grooves with a 20º sidewall to optimise performance on full shots. The 54º to 62º options are milled with a 28º sidewall and tighter radius for more spin and precision on finesse shots around the green and from the sand. The hydropearl 2.0 chrome finish adds to the higher spin and lower launch, especially from wet and rough conditions.
“As great as these clubs look, it comes down to performance off the face,” said John K. Solheim. “The new Emery blast makes a huge difference. The added spin and lower launch overall give shot makers the control they need to play at the pin on full shots or take on the tough shots around the green.”
Expanded Lofts and Grinds
Two grind options in multiple lofts expand the offerings to ensure a wedge choice to match a golfer’s playing conditions and angle of attack. In the “S” grind, moderate bounce and a rounded lead edge combine to produce an option that fits most golfers.
It comes in seven loft/bounce configurations. The “T” Grind has a narrower sole with approximately 3º less bounce than the “S” to make it more versatile and precise around the green. It’s available in three lofts, including a 62º, which offers low bounce and high loft for the most greenside versatility and will be a popular choice on tour when matching course conditions. Golfers can also choose from eight custom grinds through PING Wrx, the company’s facility that custom builds the majority of its tour and college equipment.
59º EYE2 Toe Option
The PING EYE2 wedge face profile inspired the “S” grind 59º option, which is distinguished by the high-toe design made popular by Karsten Solheim’s iconic sand wedge developed in the early 1980s. It features a blended hosel and a more traditional sole design than the original with approximately 1.5º less bounce than the other “S” grind lofts.
“I may be a little biased since my swimming pool as a kid was shaped like a PING EYE2 wedge, but I love the high-toe option in this line,” said John K. Solheim. “It gives me the confidence and versatility to play high and low shots with a lot of spin without being intimidated. It’s especially good out of the bunker.”

AlumiCore Technology Increases MOI
An aerospace-grade aluminium insert allows approximately 30 grams of material from the centre of the club to be redistributed to the perimeter, some in the form of toe and shaft tip weights, elevating the MOI to match that of the larger PING i210 iron. Each iron in the set requires a different size aluminium core, adding to the precision and complexity of the manufacturing process to ensure quality and performance in every iron. The result is a forgiving, forged iron with a crisp, solid feel at impact that delivers lower launch and trajectory control with the precision expected from a blade design.
“We know this type of player may not put forgiveness at the top of their list when considering their iron choice, so we engineered it in a way that increased the MOI in a clean and impactful way,” said John K. Solheim.
“At address, it’s perfectly sized and shaped with a thin top line and the right amount of offset. It has a narrow sole to move smoothly through the turf and ensure a pleasing impact experience. Inside, the AlumiCore technology allows us to increase the MOI by moving the weight to the perimeter using toe and shaft tip weights. 100% Inspected Manufacturing Steps
During the development of the iron, PING’s innovation and engineering teams spent significant time perfecting the manufacturing process which includes 100% inspection of numerous steps, including sole shaping, head polishing, face machining and head forging. Joining the 1025 carbon steel forged body, aluminium insert and laser cut 17-4 stainless steel face employs a forging process known as swaging, which applies pressure to the three parts, creating a unibody-style part that is then plasma-welded to seal the seams.
“The i59 project pulled in our expertise from multiple disciplines within our engineering and innovation groups,” said John K. Solheim.
“Once we had the idea to join the three parts together, we were challenged with scaling the complicated process within the manufacturing process. In collaboration with our suppliers, we developed highly-precise procedures that makes the i59 the most technologically advanced iron we’ve ever manufactured.”
April 27, 2021 – The Ladies European Tour (LET) has announced PING Europe as the official apparel supplier of the European Solheim Cup Team for both the 2021 Solheim Cup at Inverness Club, Toledo, and the 2023 Solheim Cup at Finca Cortesin, Costa del Sol, Spain.
This year’s staging will be the first time in Solheim Cup history that Team Europe has sported PING Apparel, as they look to defend the coveted trophy that they won in spectacular fashion at Gleneagles in 2019.
PING has a historic association with the biennial contest, playing an integral role in the event’s conception and first staging in 1990, with the contest named after Karsten and Louise Solheim, the founders of PING.
As one of three Global Partners, PING’s decision to support Team Europe further highlights the brand’s commitment to supporting and growing women’s golf. This significant support has also been highlighted through the PING Junior Solheim Cup, founded in 2002, which has been a pathway for some of the world’s best players. Catriona Matthew, the 2019 and upcoming 2021 Team Europe captain, already enjoys a successful partnership with PING and has recently collaborated in designing bespoke outfits for this year’s tournament days.

HIGH MOI, MULTI-MATERIAL DESIGNS
Each model in the series is built using aerospace-grade materials in a variety of shapes and sizes to achieve new levels of forgiveness. The three Anser versions (Anser, Anser 2, Anser 4) combine a stainless-steel head with tungsten heel and toe weights to elevate the popular design’s MOI to its highest ever. In the Kushin 4, DS 72 and Tyne 4, a steel weight is used in the heel and tungsten is applied to the toe to better optimize the CG location for higher performance.
The Fetch and Oslo H join a cast 304 stainless steel body with an aluminum sole plate to position mass around the entire perimeter to create highly forgiving mallet-style designs. In the new CA 70, a dense stainless steel sole weight lowers the CG of the aluminum body for more forgiving results. The Harwood delivers the highest MOI in the line due to its 6061 aluminum body and 93g tungsten weights in all four corners of the fully-machined design.
DUAL-DUROMETER INSERT FOR SOFT, SOLID FEEL
The soft, responsive face in every model is the result of an innovative dual-durometer PEBAX insert material and uniform, shallow grooves. The softer front layer of the insert ensures the precision necessary for shorter, delicate must-makes. The firmer back layer offers the solid feedback and distance control required for holing longer-range putts and improving overall consistency.
“By combining the two hardnesses of the PEBAX material we’re providing a feel preference that appeals to a large segment of golfers while delivering the consistency golfers need to improve their ‘strokes gained: putting’ results,” said John K. Solheim. “It is designed for the golfer who prefers a putter on the softer side of the feel spectrum but with the response of a firm face.”
PREMIUM APPEARANCE
A dark, stealth PVD finish on the heads and a black chrome shaft create a sleek and attractive look from head to grip. All models come standard with a fixed-length shaft that can be custom built from 32” – 38” in ¼” increments. PING’s patented adjustable shaft, which adjusts from 32” – 36”, is available as a custom upgrade.
PING PISTOL GRIP OPTIONS
Three proprietary PING grip designs allow golfers to dial in their optimal fit and feel. The PP58 Mid (87g) is a standard-sized pistol shape made of rubber and designed to help square the face at impact. It is the standard grip on the Anser, Anser 4, Kushin 4, CA 70, DS 72, Tyne 4 and Tyne C. The PP60 (86g) is a midsize, pistol design with a rubber under-listing with larger flat surfaces for increased face awareness. It comes standard on the Anser 2, Fetch, Oslo H and Harwood. The optional PP58-S (99g) is a midsize, pistol design and features a straight taper and larger flat surface for face awareness.
PING ANSER
The timeless Anser is heel-toe tungsten weighted for forgiveness, and the rounded corners, softer ballast surfaces and center line help make alignment easy. For slight-arc stroke types, the Anser makes squaring the face to the target line easy and natural.
Differs from the Anser with a slightly longer and narrower profile, and sharper corners, but shares its clean geometries and center alignment line to making aiming easy. Heel-toe tungsten weighting provides stability, forgiveness and accuracy.
Designed for players who love the classic look and feel of the Anser-style putter and benefit from a strong-arc model. With heel-toe tungsten weighting for forgiveness and slight variations in its longer, narrower profile and sharper corners.
A steel weight in the heel and tungsten in the toe elevate MOI, and this “deep blade” model’s parallel and perpendicular visual cues make alignment easier. Its geometries fit the eye, and for strong-arc players the Kushin 4 promotes a confident, consistent putting stroke.
This mid-mallet utilizes a steel weight in the heel and tungsten in the toe to stabilize the head and create high forgiveness, and the clean lines with perpendicular and parallel visual cues combine to simplify alignment. The classic Anser-style hosel promotes a slight rotation.

Refined ResortCoastal TidesHeritage
The range features three distinct colour palettes. The ‘Refined Resort’ colour story provides both statement colours and a technical edge, while the ‘Coastal Tides’ palette features three aqua blue shades for a fresh, refined and contemporary on-course look. The ‘Heritage’ palette sees the continuation of key shades to create a core colour language that transcends the seasons.
