Galvin Green – Premium Swedish brand celebrates 30 years of pioneering golf clothing

July 5, 2020 – Galvin Green, the brand that revolutionised waterproofs in the 1990’s and has taken technical golf clothing to another level during this Millennium, celebrates its 30th birthday this month and enjoys a global status that founder Tomas Nilsson could once only dream about.

As an entrepreneur and recreational golfer in the Swedish town of Växjö back in 1990, Tomas saw an opportunity to invest in golf and create a global brand. “My goal was to produce the best quality golf clothes on the market and we’re now a decade ahead of where I believed we could be on a global scale,” said Tomas Nilsson.

“Functional clothing is especially important in golf, where you’re often exposed to sun, rain and wind.  It is incredibly important that you have the right clothing regardless of the weather, so you can continue to enjoy your round and play to your best. That’s why we’ve always selected the very best materials, matched with the best styling and details possible,” he added.

Creative Director Mats Lundqvist shared the passion for quality when he composed the first Galvin Green range in the summer of 1990 and admits he learnt a lot from the experience. “I learned how important it was to have a specific function for each garment and explain it to the users. It meant that our vision for the next 59 ranges was to design functional garments that really perform on the golf course. At the time, the market for functional golf wear wasn’t so big, so we decided we could fill that gap and take it forward,” added Mats.

“Thanks to the owner’s ambition and the talent of designers like Mats over these years, Galvin Green has become something of a household name in golf more quickly than first envisaged,” said CEO Nicholai Stein.

“We’re proud of the fact that golfers can purchase our garments at 25 of the world’s 30 top-ranked courses and many more besides. Without ever taking success for granted, we see Galvin Green as a major brand and key vendor in the golf apparel industry worldwide for many years to come, as we continue to ensure that technical performance takes priority over price,” he added.

PUSHING BOUNDARIES

Unlike many other golf brands, Galvin Green has pushed the boundaries for not only functional golf wear, but colourful outfits too. While the market was full of Navy and Green block color tops three decades ago, they introduced bright colors such as Orange, often in various shades alongside White, Black or Navy.

We’ve been surprised how popular Orange has been over the years, as it’s not a colour most people would wear anywhere other than the golf course,” added Mats Lundqvist.

The long-term legacy of this bold approach has given the brand a reputation for never compromising on its innovation and product quality in a fiercely competitive market.

“Living up to the ‘we never compromise’ philosophy is a challenge when the consumer can come across the brand at so many touch points, but it means our message is well understood by our customers and those who may be new to the Galvin Green proposition,” said Nicholai Stein.

“I believe that today’s serious golfer trusts the brand and is reassured by its long track record of adding new products and driving up standards across all golf apparel categories. They recognise that Galvin Green is always bringing something new to the market that will turn heads and help to dress them in style and comfort. Our sustainability programme, which began in 2012, has developed at pace with long-lasting garments aimed to appeal to younger golfers. It has put us among the industry’s world leaders in environmental footprint management and we intend to stay ahead of competitors who will find it hard to compete in the eco-generation climate,” he added.

LONG LASTING

In addition to working with fabric suppliers under the reputable Bluesign textile production regime for almost a decade, Galvin Green has also benefited from advice from a Swedish Government consultant who confirmed that the best contribution the brand could make to the planet’s future was to produce garments that not only perform, but last a long time.

Among the most revolutionary innovations from the brand was the introduction of INSULA sweaters in 2004, as part of its pioneering layering for golf initiative known as the Multi-Layer Concept.  It culminated this year with the DWIGHT sweater, made entirely from recycled plastic bottles.

“From a time when cotton shirts dominated the scene with shrinkage and heavy moisture absorption and knitted sweaters weighed golfers down if it rained, there have been huge advancements in fabric technology for golfers in the last three decades and the breathable, non-absorbent INSULA garments rank among our most prized achievements,” said Mats Lundqvist.

According to Mats, another landmark was the introduction of the GORE-TEX Paclite rain jacket in 2003, which meant that a lightweight waterproof top could be worn without any sacrifices to the swing. It also ensured durable waterproofing and breathability that was hard to envisage 10 years earlier. It was this advanced technology – allied to more recent stretch fabrics like the revolutionary C-KNIT backer that enables the jacket to ‘slide & glide’ smoothly over garments worn underneath – that Galvin Green went on to incorporate in outerwear designed exclusively for the victorious European Ryder Cup team in Paris in 2018.

“It was a great experience to work with Captain Thomas Bjørn, deciding on the final look and details of the outfits created for the best players in Europe to perform well and retain the trophy,” he added.

Another ground-breaking innovation that year was the launch of the INTERFACE-1 hybrid jackets that can be worn 95 out of 100 rounds, quickly followed in 2019 by the super-lightweight SHAKEDRY advanced waterproof technology.

Looking ahead, Nicholai Stein is confident that serious golfers will always think about Galvin Green when considering their next clothing purchase and the various playing conditions they are likely to encounter. “They can rest assured that we will always strive to produce the best possible garments for the serious golfer and take them with us on the journey,” he added.

The company headquarters remains in Växjö (Sweden), which now promotes itself as ‘Europe’s Greenest City’ on the back of investing in renewable energy, recycling and conservation.

Galvin Green – Appontment of Nicholai Stein as its new CEO

January 13, 2020 – Leading golf apparel supplier Galvin Green has appointed Nicholai Stein as its new CEO, based at the corporate headquarters in Växjö, southern Sweden.

The directors of the Swedish brand, which celebrates its 30th Anniversary in the golf industry this year, have chosen to promote the former Brand Manager from within the company to replace Christian Nilsson, who left the organisation last year.

Having joined Galvin Green in 2013 from a senior marketing position with Lee Jeans at the VF Corporation, 43-year-old Stein has been instrumental in changing the designs of recent garment collections and introducing the fashionable EDGE range.

“I’m proud to be given the task of taking the Galvin Green brand to the next level with innovative premium products designed by golfers for golfers,” said Nicholai Stein. “The brand has a very strong reputation across the golfing world and retains market leadership in key high-end apparel categories with garments increasingly made from sustainable fabrics.

“We need to continue to excite serious golfers and provide them with clothing that offers exceptional levels of comfort and performance each and every season. Our challenge is to go the extra mile in finding ground-breaking technology to incorporate into stylish products that genuinely surprise golfers with their originality and the distinctive Galvin Green feel-good factor,” he added.

Galvin Green garments can be found at a host of the world’s Top 100 golf courses – including Bandon Dunes, Cypress Point, Pine Valley, Pebble Beach, Royal Birkdale, Royal County Down, Lahinch, Royal Portrush, Royal Dornoch, Ballybunion, Royal Melbourne, Barnbougle, Cape Kidnappers, Shanqin Bay, Casa de Campo and The Club at Nine Bridges.

On the professional Tours, Christiaan Bezuidenhout recently extended his three-year association with the brand, having won his maiden European Tour title at the Andalucía Masters at Valderrama last year. Other brand Tour ambassadors include Troy Merritt, Martin Laird, Ben Silverman, Theo Humphrey, Chris Paisley, Laurie Canter, Caroline Masson and Alexander Bjork, who has worn Galvin Green clothing since he began playing golf in his home town of Växjö.

Galvin Green – Extension link with promising stars Guido Migliozzi and Christiaan Bezuidenhout

October 30, 2017 – Premium performance clothing brand Galvin Green has extended its association with promising young stars within the growing Modest! Golf Management stable – Italy’s Guido Migliozzi and Christiaan Bezuidenhout from South Africa.

Both European Challenge Tour players have signed new two-year agreements to wear Galvin Green garments exclusively at tournaments around the world and appear as prominent brand ambassadors.

“Christiaan and Guido fit our brand perfectly and are just the type of players we want to work with,” said Brand Manager Nicholai Stein. “They will be involved in future product launches and play a big part in our future success. This dual agreement shows how the philosophies of Modest! Golf and Galvin Green are very close,” he added.

Christiaan, 23, finished strongly at the recent Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with a closing 67 on the Old Course at St Andrews. He was runner-up at the 2016 BMW SA Open and has won three events in his native South Africa since turning professional in 2015.

Guido, 20, won on the Alps Tour last month when he defeated two Frenchmen in a play-off for the Open Abruzzo title in his native Italy. He turned professional last October after competing in the Terre dei Consoli Open and enjoying a highly successful amateur career.

Mark McDonnell Director of Modest! Golf Management said: “We are delighted to announce Guido and Christiaan as the latest faces of Galvin Green. The brand is so supportive of its players, always going above and beyond for them. Galvin Green has lots of exciting projects ahead and Guido and Christiaan are both proud and excited to be an integral part of those plans.”

Modest! Golf was set up by Modest! Management, which has a long history within the entertainment sector of looking after acts such as One Direction, Olly Murs and Little Mix, alongside keen golfer Niall Horan.

Galvin Green is the UK’s market leader in golf outerwear and an Official Supplier to the European Team competing at the 2018 Ryder Cup contest in Paris.

Galvin Green – A small company with a big golf clothing brand

January 16, 2015 – These are days of intense activity at the headquarters of Galvin Green, on the outskirts of Växjö (Sweden). The company with the most highly valued technical and functional golf clothing in the market is debuting with its own booth at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, after successfully introducing the brand in the U.S. during 2014. And despite all this, it had no qualms about making a space in its agenda to accommodate two of its best customers in Portugal, and MyGolfWay.com, to offer us a day of presentations and product training. Many thanks!

We went into the building of avant-garde Nordic architecture, modernized only eighteen months ago to accommodate its project of expansion. The extension of the offices and warehouse is allowing Galvin Green to follow its envisaged plan of growth, in which its U.S. debut is regarded as a major milestone and challenge for the company, although it still retains the slogan of “a small company with a big brand.”

The day began with a review of the showroom on the first floor. The new colours of the 2015 Collection caught our eye with garments in striking dark green, and others in attractive shades in purple and midnight and marine blue combined with blacks and whites. Then Daniel Ohlsson, European Export Manager, gave us a brief talk about the history of the company, which Tomas Nilsson started in the 70’s.

The commitment to making the best technical golf apparel for complete protection in all weather conditions was fully reflected in 1992 with the launch of the first garments made with Gore-Tex and Windstopper. The ISO 9001 Certification (1997) was followed by the introduction of Gore-Tex Paclite (2003), which made the garments lighter. Four years later came the design of the first Gore-Tex waterproof jacket and trousers in fully stretch material (2007). Comfort became even greater when, in 2011, garments were designed with four-way stretch fabrics, both in Gore-Tex and Windstopper material. The story culminates as one of the official brands of the 2014 Ryder Cup. Many thanks!

The Brand Manager of Galvin Green, Nicholai Stein, then told us about the continued and controlled growth of the Swedish brand’s business, registering its best year in 2014 with a 20% increase in sales, with the largest weight in value taken by Gore-Tex (23%) and Gore-Tex Paclite (23%) garments, trousers (12%), shirts (11%) and Windstopper (10%). Positioned as a high-priced and trendy brand, Galvin Green has achieved success in one of the most demanding golf markets, the United Kingdom, where it is the leading brand in high-performance golf outerwear, rated as favourite by 51% of British golfers, according to recent surveys.

Here the organization and strategy take precedence over everything else. Galvin Green’s philosophy focuses on healthy growth and careful account management, with a view to becoming the leading brand in “premium, functional, technical and high performance clothing for golfers”, and therefore the best in its category in… all areas! This is how this brand differentiates itself in the market, standing out for truly bettering the game of golf and becoming a sign of perfection.

Well, we are here from Portugal and Spain because one of the focuses of Galvin Green is the product training. The Galvin Green Collection 2015 is going to bring us big, attractive surprises from 9th of February onwards, with an exciting range of garments carrying a redesigned logo and the original marketing campaign ‘The Art of Performance’, which will show us a jacket disassembled in its 101 pieces, or a mobile app that will recommend which Galvin Green garments you should use according to the climate that day on your golf course, or how the collection will be presented in its own brand corner within the golf shops. Many thanks!

We then started the tour within the facilities in Växjö. We saw the team working to put the logos on the garments. The product test area has special machines for textile analysis, and there is a room with six washing machines to push the garments to the limit. We crossed the design department where a simulation of the disassembled jacket decorated the wall. And finally we went down to the warehouse to see the organization of the pallets and the packaging of the products in different colours. It is clearly a very close-knit family company with about 40 employees at the headquarters, and no more than 50 if you count the staff of the two current subsidiaries, Galvin Green UK and Galvin Green USA, distributing to a total of 25 countries worldwide.

In the afternoon we were received by Mats Lundqvist, Head of Product Development at Galvin Green, and one of the brains behind why Galvin Green is so highly positioned in the market, and one of the people responsible for the premium reputation the brand holds in the mind of most golfers, whether men or women, amateur or professional. In his master-class Mats explained the design, functionality and development of the products, with demos that allowed us to verify why Gore-Tex offers the best balance between waterproofing and breathability in golf jackets and trousers. The total waterproofing is also guaranteed by sealing the seams of the garments, and the breathability enables the body to breathe and to keep warm and dry.

Galvin-Green-Mats-Lunqvist-Foto-MyGolfWay

Testing a garment with and without Windstopper highlights the difference, since this membrane prevents the wind passing through the garment, making it even more breathable and durable. Then Mats spoke about the fabrics developed by the company, such as Insula used in the warm tops which are light and sensitive, and the comfortable polo shirts made of Ventil8 – a special fibre with silver threads integrated into the filament, creating an anti-odour and anti-bacterial system that maintains its effectiveness after multiple washing, and given the quick dry properties with no need of ironing, makes our life much more comfortable.

But Galvin Green is much more than waterproof clothing and technological fabrics. As a pioneer brand in applying the Multilayer Concept in the sport of golf, the functionality of the garments allow us to combat any adverse weather conditions such as cold, cold and wind, cold and rain, or heat, changes that can often happen when you’re playing four hours on a golf course. Combining the different garments (Gore-Tex, Gore-Tex Paclite, Windstopper, Insula, Ventil8, Skintight Compression and Skintight Thermal) you won’t find yourself compromised on the course as you’ll be perfectly protected, dry and comfortable, and can enjoy your golf with the proper body temperature.

Galvin-Green-Showroom-2015-1-Foto-MyGolfWay

Would you like more functionality? Mats Lundqvist explained why the tops are short at the front and long at the back, why they have tight sleeves, velcro strips on the sides, rain channels in the cuffs, a pocket on the back, an inner mesh, half or full zippers… All those details, big and small, that a golfer can imagine, and those you’d never even thought of, have been devised, developed and tested by Galvin Green designers and golfers to make playing on the course with their garments, single or combined, an experience of comfort whatever the climate. Many thanks!

So this is Galvin Green, a brand that stands out for its solid commitment to specialized clothing for golf, which designs and produces with the best materials available on the market. Beyond the price of the garments, its mission is to offer the best technical and functional golf wear, teaching the players how to dress properly in order to play their best game in any weather condition. With this serious, rigorous commitment to golf, Galvin Green can now proudly declare that it is well received and sells in 50 of the Top 100 golf courses and resorts in the world.

Thus ends this instructive, interesting and enjoyable visit to Sweden that has allowed us to appreciate how good it feels to play golf well equipped. We finished with a surprise – our certificate in Galvin Green Multilayer Concept and the technology of Gore-Tex and Windstopper. Again, Many thanks!
