Ping – Introducing the new Glide wedges, already succeeding on Tour

Ping-Glide-1

February 4, 2015 – The new Glide wedge continues to make its presence felt on the PGA Tour, where 15 of 17 Ping pros utilize a total of 39 wedges. In Europe, nine of 14 Ping pros play 21 wedges, including Miguel Ángel Jiménez, who won with Glide wedges two weeks ago in Mitsubishi Electric Championship, at the Champions Tour in Hawaii.

At last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, Angel Cabrera was T1 in G.I.R., hitting 56 of 72 greens, or 77.78%. Partial credit goes to his new Glide wedges. He relies on a 54ºWS (wide sole) and a 60ºSS (standard sole). Ten of the 11 Ping pros in Phoenix relied on Glide wedges.

Persistent rain on Friday and damp conditions Saturday highlighted one of the Glide wedge’s advantages. Its 431 stainless steel head features a moisture-repelling chrome-plated finish, which creates more friction for improved spin and consistency in wet conditions and lies in the rough.

Ping-New-products-2015

January 19, 2015 – Game-changing innovation and expanded custom-fitting opportunities provided the inspiration for PING’s newest products, which the company this January 2015. The Glide wedges, G30 LS Tec (Low-Spin Technology)driver, Cadence TR putters each showcase PING’s primary point of difference: its ability to make measurable performance gains without sacrificing any important attributes.

The Glide wedges are engineered from the hands down (grip to sole) to optimise versatility and control. The G30 LS Tec driver (PING’s third G30 driver model) combines lower spin with a high MOI. Cadence TR putters offer traditional- and heavy-weighted models to match a player’s stroke tempo and feel preference.

“Engineering performance without sacrifice means as we achieve more distance, for example, there’s no trade-off in forgiveness, accuracy or feel,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “Our Glide wedges have several innovations to make it our most versatile and consistent wedge line ever. In the Cadence TR putters, different-weighted face inserts represent a new approach to putter fitting for better results on the greens. The G30 LS Tec driver complements our industry-leading G30 driver family and is a great fit for golfers looking for that elusive combination of low spin and forgiveness.”

Ping – Andy Sullivan gives the G30 its first win in 2015 at South African Open

Andy-Sullivan-2

January 11, 2015 – Andy Sullivan snatched the South African Open Championship from Charl Schwartzel after a dramatic play-off, in what is the first win for Ping G30s in 2015.

Sullivan fired a remarkable approach from the trees to 12 feet at the first extra hole and sank the putt to secure his first European Tour win. Schwartzel took a five shot lead into the final round at Glendower Golf Club and still led by four with five holes to play.

However, the former Masters Tournament champion then failed to get up and down from a plugged lie in a greenside bunker on the 14th and three-putted the 16th to run up a double bogey six, before a poor tee shot on the 17th led to another bogey and left him tied with Sullivan on 11 under par.

The players returned to the 18th for a sudden-death play-off and, after both had missed the fairway, Sullivan produced a stunning recovery for a winning birdie. The English player has a golf bag full of Ping equipment, including the G30 driver, fairway wood and hybrid golf clubs.

“It’s unbelievable,”Andy Sullivan said during the trophy presentation. “After Saturday I didn’t think I stood much of a chance with Charl getting ahead that far.

“I just dug in there yesterday and today and found myself in a position where I had a chance to win. My caddie said over the last few holes ‘no regrets’ and I’ve definitely got no regrets over the last few holes, especially that play-off hole.

“Charl has won Major Championships; my caddie said ‘expect him to hole’ (his third shot) and he nearly did. I was delighted just to hit the green and have a chance to win and I’m just glad I took it.”

What’s in Andy Sullivan’s golf bag?

  • Driver: Ping G30 (9º, Voodoo XVS6 shaft)
  • Fairway Wood: Ping G30 (15º)
  • Hybrid: Ping G30 (19º)
  • Irons: Ping S55 (3-9)
  • Wedges: Ping Prototype (47º, 54º, 60º)
  • Putter: Ping Scottsdale TR Anser 2

Interview – Fernando Cambronero, General Manager of Ping Spain

Entrevista-Fernando-Cambronero

November 17, 2014 – When Fernando Cambronero started playing golf, he didn’t know what a Ping golf club was. And when he took over the distribution of the brand in Spain in the late 80s he still hadn’t even used one. He couldn’t have imagined the success that the brand he distributes in Spain would achieve, boosting the motivation of amateur golfers with custom fitted clubs and making their game more enjoyable.

Nor did it occur to Fernando that, as a manager of the company, he would contribute to raising the image of Ping to the very top of the Tour, when more than a quarter century ago he decided to take on a chap from Guadalhorce (Malaga, Spain) without knowing anything about him except that he apparently ‘hits very well.’ A guy called Jimenez, alias the ‘Pisha.’

“I first got to know the Ping brand in 1986,” explains Fernando Cambronero to MyGolfWay.com. “I’d been a member of the Board of Directors of the Club de Campo del Mediterráneo, here in Castellon, for four years, when Victor Arandes became the new President. He had a golf equipment distribution company called Golf Pro. He soon asked me if I would be interested in working with him to manage a brand that was pending to be granted.”

Fernando Cambronero with John Solheim, current CEO of Ping Golf and Karsten Solheim's son.
Fernando Cambronero with John Solheim, current CEO of Ping Golf and Karsten Solheim’s son.

At that time Fernando, a born worker from a humble family, was the representative of a pharmaceutical company in Barcelona (Dr. Esteve Group) in Castellon, but he dared to say yes to Victor Arandes, and that’s how the two partners threw themself into the adventure of Ping in Spain.

“I recognize that at the time I didn’t have much idea about what Ping was, and I didn’t use any Ping clubs”, Cambronero confesses. “We started the company, but after three years Ping decided to create its own subsidiary, and it then offered me the position of Manager of Ping Spain”.

By then Fernando Cambronero was in his forties, and just then something happened which would mark the rest of his life. In 1989 he went to the USA for the mandatory interview with Karsten Solheim, founder of the brand, at the Ping headquarters in Phoenix. He wanted to meet Fernando and make sure that the future of Ping in the Iberian Peninsula was being handed to someone with his same feeling. “I said to him, ‘Look, what I’m looking for right now is a job for me and my family to get going. I‘m not trying to become a millionaire’. And he answered, ‘Fernando, do you know that I was much older than you when I started with Ping?”

Undoubtedly, the engineer who worked as a shoemaker when he started developing his first prototype irons and putters in his garage in Redwood City (California) in 1959, was always very clear about how to run his business, but he couldn’t have imagined how far his legacy would reach in the golf world of the 21st Century.

Entrevista-Fernando-Cambronero-3

A family business to attending the golfer

From then until now, the growth of Ping in Spain has paralleled the popularization of golf in Spain, which has gone from the 50,000 licenses of 1990 to 300,000 licenses in 2014. Today everyone who frequents a Spanish golf club knows the brand well, like in any golf course around the world.

What a great feeling to be involved in Ping! “Incredibly, or rather, ‘credibly’ for me, I’m in the best company in the world,” says Fernando Cambronero, “in every way. And although things have changed in recent years because of the competition and the demand for profit, it is a sensational company for its workers. I am 67 years old and I could have retired, but I’m here, working happily, and all thanks to my team which still puts up with me, ha ha.”

What is it that distinguishes Ping from other brands. “Well, Ping is a golf company, and others are businesses dedicated to golf,” clarifies the Director of the brand in Spain. “Ping is a family business, and others are on the stock exchange. As we are not accountable to any board of administration outside the Solheim family, it’s the product and the superb, unquestionable ability of our engineers to improve the current products which marks our times. We put all our efforts into offering the player the best possible golf club, with the specifications with which they can develop their best game.”

Entrevista-Fernando-Cambronero-4

What is it that makes those who play with Ping clubs generally not change brand? “This is because they know that Ping doesn’t release a product into the market until it has substantially improved on the previous one.” At a time when golf multinational companies try to increase sales at all costs, the launch of new products has accelerated and the life cycle of new clubs has shortened to hitherto unimagined limits. And yet, “the life of a Ping product right now is between 18 and 24 months,” says Fernando.

“Previously it could be 5 to 6 years, but due to rapid advances in R & D, together with competition and demand pressures, we are managing to improve previous products faster. But most of our competitors are releasing new products every six months. I am not a technician in this sense, but in the company we know that this is not enough time to make substantial improvements. One and a half or two years are needed to work with new materials, redistribute weights, change the centre of gravity… and getting them to work together requires a series of tests so that the player can notice an improvement in his or her game. In some models we’ve even taken three years to make improvements.”

The best example is the G line which, counting from the G2 to G30, represents 15 years of success for Ping during which each new G family has outdone the previous one. “Over the years, the continuous improvement of this line of clubs has meant that the G30 caused a lot of expectation before being launched three months ago on the market, which made it our biggest product launch ever. The G30 family is causing a tremendous admiration amongst both amateur and professional players. The G30 driver is being used by 72% of our players on the PGA Tour and 88% on the European Tour.”

“Billy Horschell, Ping PGA Tour player gained 12 yards with the change to the G30 driver just a few weeks before winning the much coveted FedExCup. And it isn’t only successful in the hands of our professionals Angel Cabrera, Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Azahara Muñoz. It’s already become the sales leader in the US, UK and most of Europe, including Spain.”

From perimeter weighting to custom fitting

Initially Ping offered pioneering and innovative technology in its clubs, starting with the perimeter weight distribution towards the toe and heel with the famous Anser putter, and the back cavity irons that have been copied throughout the world. But Ping’s big break came as the precursor and developer of custom fitting, for which it has established itself as a world leader.

“Actually, Ping clubs are only sold custom fitted”, says Fernando Cambronero. “We don’t have factory-mounted clubs or prefabricated sets. Instead we have all the heads, shafts and grips possible. When we get an order from Spain, it comes from our UK factory, where they put it together according to the characteristics of the player, so that it is completely custom built.”

According to the General Manager of Ping Spain, at the moment Ping carries out around 50-55% of the fittings done worldwide, in spite of the fact that the big multinationals have been attacking this service in their business operations for some years. Although unlike Ping, most companies have focused initially on finished product customization – the adjustability of drivers and woods, and irons of the same pattern with different player profiles – and later on the professional fitting as developed by Ping. Normally, a golfer for whom a fitting has been done for Ping clubs, only has to wait 8-10 days at the most before being able to play.

Ping-Fitting-Days-CG-Sant-Cugat

So the Ping clubs in the shops are there for fitting, or to sell? “Well yes, they are for sale, but we don’t push,” explains Fernando Cambronero, who distributes Ping through some 200 authorized shops. “The stores have a representative sample of our product range to offer. What happens? Well, there are some more or less standard measures, such as the Black dot of our Colour Code with Regular shaft, which fits a relatively high percentage of players, some 15-20%. Although it could be that these same players require a Yellow dot grip, a little thicker, or Green dot, a little thinner, and have to retouch it. But of course, they see the clubs, they try them and they want them now.”

“That’s why I always recommend that they buy clubs, then they do a fitting and if adjustments are needed, they send them to us in Castellon, where we’ll change the Colour Code to suit the player’s swing, free of charge.” And he continues: “Changing the Colour Code, the essence of our brand, is a free service that Ping offers for life as often as necessary in the same set. We like to say ‘a player decides to change the model because of the improvements in the new club, not because the current club has cease to serve.'”

THE HISTORY OF ‘PISHA’ WITH PING

Entrevista-Fernando-Cambronero-5

To find out about the loyalty of Miguel Angel Jimenez to the Ping brand, we have spoken to the key person. Fernando was the one who paved the way for ‘Pisha’ to now be one of the most loved brand ambassadors, not only for his international victories – he has over 20 golden putters and a wedge in the Ping Gold Putter Vault in Phoenix – or more than 600 tournaments appearances on the European Tour, but for his charisma on and off the course that he is nicknamed “the most interesting man in the world”. How the spark between Miguel Angel and Ping occur?

“Miguel Angel has been with Ping since 1987,” said Fernando Cambronero. “Two players who are good friends of mine, Emilio Rodriguez and Jose Luis Mangas, who are now in Villamartin and Aloha, respectively, said, ‘Hey, there’s a guy who plays very well in Malaga. See if you can do something for him’. I didn’t know him and I hadn’t seen him play, and I knew he was in La Manga where the European Tour’s Qualifying Schoolused to be played.”

“On the last day I said to myself, I’ll see if I can find him. I was standing in front of the marker board, when I saw a player come by and I asked: Hey, you know Miguel Angel Jimenez? ‘That’s me!’ What a coincidence. Do you want to play with Ping? ‘It’s just that I haven’t got the card yet,’ he said. Never mind, they have spoken very highly of you. Do you want to play with Ping? ‘That would be fantastic’. Well, what do you need? We sent him what he asked for, and it’s been like that ever since. He got the card in 1988, he took over the Ping department on the European Tour, and look how far he’s come.”

Ping – The arsenal of Bubba Watson to win the WGC-HSBC Champions

Bubba-Watson-HSBC-1

November 10, 2014 –Two moments of magic on Sheshan International’s 18th hole saw Bubba Watson win the WGC-HSBC Champions after a play-off with Tim Clark on a dramatic final day in Shanghai.

Ping staff player was two shots clear with three holes to play, only to bogey the 16th and run up a double bogey on the 17th after failing to escape a greenside bunker at the first attempt. That dropped the Masters Tournament champion one shot behind playing partners Clark and Rickie Fowler, as well as the final group of Graeme McDowell, Hiroshi Iwata and Martin Kaymer.

Clark looked in pole position when he hit his third shot to the par five 18th to four feet and saw Fowler find the water and Watson a greenside bunker. However, Watson then amazingly holed his bunker shot for an eagle and Clark’s birdie was only good enough to leave the pair tied on 11 under, with the final group needing to birdie the last to join the play-off.

Bubba-Watson-HSBC-3

Clark and Watson returned to the 18th for the play-off and Watson found the same greenside bunker with his second shot after Clarke had hit his third to around 20 feet. Watson was unable to repeat his heroics from the sand but after Clark had left his birdie attempt short, the left-hander holed his birdie putt to seal victory.

“For me this is the big one,”Bubba Watson said after his third win in 2014. “It’s very big because I always wanted to win outside the US. It’s my seventh win, gets me closer to ten wins which has always been my goal. It’s a World Golf Championship, so when you add it all up it means a lot.”

Speaking about the 72nd hole, the 36 year old added: “It was such a tough bunker shot you are not really thinking about making it, but I told my caddie it’s been a wild day, a wild couple of holes, but if we can make this it changes everything and it went in like a putt. Clark was like ‘Why would you do that?!’

“In the play-off, it was funny because the bunker shot I holed was on the same line (as the putt) so we knew the line, we knew it was fast. I was trying to two-putt and it just fell in.”

Ping – G30, No1 selling driver in USA and United Kingdom in September

Driver-Ping-G30-portada

November 2, 2014 – In only its second month on the market, the Ping G30 driver achieved the No1 sales position for units and dollars in the on- and off-course retail channels combined for the month of September in the United States and the United Kingdom, according to Golf Datatech LLC, which tracks golf equipment sell-thru data for both regions.

The driver, which features an industry-first innovation called Turbulator Technology on the club’s crown, was introduced to golfers on July 31. Since its launch, demand for the driver has reached unprecedented levels for the company throughout the world as golfers realize increased clubhead and ball speeds, leading to more distance. The G30 driver also features the highest MOI of any Ping driver ever designed to ensure golfers the accuracy and consistency to hit more fairways.

“The response to the G30 driver has been phenomenal,” said John A. Solheim, Ping Chairman & CEO. “Our engineering team has created a club that is impacting the driver business unlike anything we’ve seen. Golfers all over the world are hitting the ball farther than ever with the G30 driver, thanks to Turbulator Technology.”

Tour acceptance has also been swift, with the majority of Ping’s staff converting to the new G30 driver immediately. Angel Cabrera won The Greenbrier Classic the first week the driver was on the PGA Tour. Bubba Watson also put the G30 driver in his bag that same week. He finished the PGA Tour season No. 1 in driving distance with an average of 314.3 yards, including launching the longest drive of the season – 424 yards – at the Bridgestone Invitational. He increased his clubhead speed by 2 mph and ball speed by 4 mph – leading to a 10-yard distance gain during testing.

Fábrica-Ping-Drivers-G30

Billy Horschel‘s switch to the new driver gained him 12 yards off the tee and played a big role in helping him win the FedExCup. After putting the G30 driver in his bag, he won twice, finished second and earned more than $13.4 million.

“All golfers are benefitting from the technology of the G30 driver,” John A. Solheim said. “The tour results speak for themselves, but we’re hearing every day from golfers of all skill levels who are commenting on how the driver has changed their games. They love the turbulators.”

Ping – Hunter Mahan re-signs a multi-year agreement with the brand

Hinter-Mahan-Ping-01

October 19, 2014 – There was an upbeat ‘new’ theme to Hunter Mahan’s week. Relying on a new Ping G30 driver and 3-wood in the bag, he began his 12th PGA Tour season on a high note with a T3 at the Frys.com Open. In testing, Mahan reported six yards in added distance with the G30, faster ball speeds and increased forgiveness.

And as he prepares to begin his new season, Mahan has signed a multi-year agreement to continue playing Ping golf equipment, announced John A. Solheim, Ping Chairman & CEO.

In 2014, Mahan continued his winning ways, capturing his sixth PGA Tour victory at The Barclays and making history as the only player to advance to the Tour Championship every year since the inception of the FedExCup Playoffs in 2007. He had six top 10s, including at the PGA Championship, on his way to earning more than $3 million. He recently competed on his third U.S. Ryder Cup team.

“Hunter impresses us year in and year out with his consistency, and that’s a testament to how hard he works to maintain his status as one of the game’s best,” John A. Solheim said. “He combines talent with a great work ethic and a very likeable personality that connects with fans. Hunter has been a loyal Ping player since college and we’re proud to continue our affiliation with him.”

As part of the agreement, Mahan will wear a Ping hat, carry a Ping staff bag and play Ping equipment. Financial terms and the length of the agreement were not disclosed.

Hunter Mahan is currently playing a G30 driver, i25 hybrid, S55 irons, prototype Ping wedges, and a Scottsdale TR Anser 2 putter. He is 21st in the most recent Official World Golf Ranking.

Hunter-Mahan-Ping-2“Starting a new season this week, it’s amazing to think that Ping and I go back to my days at Oklahoma State,” Hunter Mahan said.

“All along, it’s been the performance of their products that has given me the consistency that’s necessary to succeed at every level. Out on tour I have complete confidence in my equipment but also in the Ping team, which does a great job making sure I’m dialled in and comfortable with my clubs. I’m thrilled to continue my relationship with a company that is an industry leader.”

Ping – The nFlight Motion, now available in Europe

Ping-nFlight-Motion

October 15, 2014 – Ping has announced that nFlight Motion is now available for clubfitters in Europe as an easy-to-use, highly-accurate fitting tool which recommends Ping driver-fitting specifications for golfers after only three shots.

“With nFlight Motion, fitters can perform a precise Ping fitting in a timely manner using a few key swing variables that make the process easy and extremely reliable,” said John A. Solheim, Ping Chairman & CEO. “It’s simple to set up and operate. In only a few minutes, fitters can recommend the best loft and shaft for various Ping driver models. It gives fitters one more innovative tool for growing their business and helping golfers play better and enjoy the game more.”

Using proprietary Ping software in conjunction with a SkyPro Golf Swing Analyzer, nFlight Motion graphically depicts fitting recommendations on an iPhone or iPod touch. The SkyPro device attaches to the shaft directly below the grip and records a range of swing variables, including clubhead speed, transition, and shaft lean at impact, which are analysed through the nFlight Motion software to make loft, shaft flex and shaft model recommendations. After an initial recommendation for loft and shaft, fitters can use Ping’s Shaft Visualisation Chart to consider additional shafts from Ping and other manufacturers.

“SkyPro’s swing analyser is a highly-accurate device that allows us to bring our nFlight software into a wireless fitting environment. It is easy-to-use and produces the reliable data needed to make precise custom fitting recommendations in a short amount of time,” said Dr. Paul Wood, Ping’s Director of Engineering. “This first-of-its-kind fitting software, created by PING engineers and software developers, gives us one more way to ensure that golfers receive the most accurate fittings in golf.”

Ping-nFlight-Motion-2

nFlight Motion is being praised by club fitters for its role in fitting golfers into a Ping driver, including the new G30, that leads to more distance and consistency.

“The accuracy of the fittings with nFlight Motion is amazing,” said Darren McKinnon, Director of Clubfitting at Pine Oaks GC in South Easton, Massachusetts, a Golf Digest Top 100 Fitter. “We use it as a starting point for a driver fitting and it consistently supports the final specifications determined at the end of the fitting session.”

Facilities committed to fitting that may not have the means to invest in more extensive fitting technologies are among the early adopters of nFlight Motion. In addition to the ease of use and reliable results, the SkyPro device is a visible technology that gets golfer’s attention.

Ping-nFlight-Motion-3“SkyPro’s 3D inertial motion sensors capture up to a hundred thousand data points from address to impact during the swing automatically, which makes it a great fit for Ping’s revolutionary nFlight Motion club fitting solution. SkyPro’s versatility makes that same accuracy available to consumers who want to improve their game with the most advanced 3D swing analyzer in golf,” said Richard Edmonson, CEO of SkyGolf, the maker of the SkyPro. “We are pleased that PING recognised the accuracy, reliability and ease-of-use of SkyPro by selecting it to drive nFlight Motion.”

“It’s a powerful tool that makes perfect business sense,” said Bill Abrams of Golf Solutions Academy based out of Balmoral Woods in Crete, IL and Carolina Club in Margate, FL. “Our facilities can’t support a large investment in fitting technology but our customers want the opportunity to be properly fit. When I take it on the range and clip the SkyPro device to a driver, it draws a crowd.”

nFlight Motion utilises the company’s nFlight app, which can be downloaded from the App Store. To operate, it requires an iPhone 4 (or newer), or an iPod touch 5th generation (or newer) running Apple iOS 7 (or newer.)

Ping – What’s in the bag of Azahara Muñoz, winner of Lacoste Ladies Open de France

Azahara-Munos-Open-de-France-portada

October 5, 2014 – Azahara Muñoz, from Spain, came from four strokes behind the overnight leader Maria Hernández to retain her Lacoste Ladies Open de France title at Golf de Chantaco. Both Ping staff golfers, first and second tied at the final leaderboard, showed their best game throughout the week playing together with the brand’s G30 driver and Ketsch putter.

The 26-year-old from San Pedro de Alcantara, near Malaga, birdied the last two holes to end a stroke clear of Hernández and Amy Boulden.

Welsh Ladies European Tour rookie Boulden, playing in the penultimate group, set the target at 10 under par and watched as Hernández missed her birdie putt before Muñoz expertly sent her ball into the middle of the hole from three metres.

Azahara-Munoz-open-de-France-2014
“I just love this place, you know. I’ve been playing well all week but putts weren’t dropping and when it came to the last two I knew I needed at least one birdie to go to the play-off,” said Azahara Muñoz. “When I dropped that one at 17 I thought I had a really good chance and on 18 too, I just focused on hitting a good putt. Putts haven’t dropped all week so I guess it was my time and I’m just really happy. On 11, 12, 13 and 14 I made pretty good par putts and that kept me going and then three birdies in the last four.”

Muñoz birdied the second, but slipped down the leader board with a double bogey on the third hole. She recovered with birdies on seven and nine before dropping another on the 10th hole. She began her birdie run with an up and down from beside the 15th green and then holed putts of 2.5 and 3 metres on the 17th and 18th holes respectively for a final round of 67 and a total of 11 under.

Maria-Hernandez-Open-de-France

Maria Hernandez, who led after each of the first three rounds, went to the turn in one under par with a three stroke cushion but made three bogeys on holes 10, 13 and 16. She said: “I was hitting the ball consistent but not as close as the last few days and I missed three short putts and made three bogeys and didn’t make any birdie putts.”
