Long Drive – The World Long Drive Spain project is underway, with places for the World Long Drive 2023 finals

May 3, 2023 – The tandem made up by Gerard Pera, pioneer and greatest exponent of the Spanish Long Drive, and the businessman Octavi Puyol, has launched a project to back Long Drive in Spain and Europe. This consists of the creation of a new tour focused on this discipline, which already has the rights of the World Long Drive (WLD).

The extraordinary and exciting news for fans of bombing cannon shots from a tee comes after the two professionals and friends reached an agreement with the American entity to organize a Spanish Tour, similar to the World Long Drive events, which will help the promotion and development of the Long Drive in Spain and Europe.

The agreement sealed with Ryan Reisbeck, event director of the 2023 WLD Tour, means that the new World Long Drive Spain Tour – although this is probably not its final name – will provide direct access to the world finals in each category: Open Division, Senior Division, Amateur Division and Women’s Division.

“It is the first time in history that there will be rights to this competition in Europe, and we hope that many powerful brands will join in supporting this spectacular modality”, said Gerard Pera, excited about this first big step.

After the success of the negotiations, the next step will be the organizing of a tour in the Iberian Peninsula, which will initially have two regular tournaments, both in Spain, or one in Spain and the other in Andorra. In addition, Handmade Custom Clubs has already been confirmed as the official fitter of the Spanish Tour.

At the same time, efforts will be made to establish alliances with the European Long Drive Games (ELDG), an existing tour that is held in Central European countries, with two events in Germany and one in Hungary, plus another in the United Kingdom and a final during the season.

If the integration is completed, the best hitters from the events on the new tour will qualify for the European finals, whose winners will have the chance to go directly to the final of the World Long Drive Tour in the United States, something that had not been achieved before now.

Thus, the longest Spanish hitters with the driver can now get prepared and start training hard, because one of those places at stake might be for them.

In the photos of the article, Gerard with Eddie Fernandes and David Mobley, world champions of the Senior Division and Super Senior Division in 2022; with Bryson DeChambeau, runner-up in the Open Division in 2022; and with Kyle Berkshire, Open Division world champion in 2019 and 2021, in that order.

Gerard Pera, who has recently been named Ambassador of Callaway Spain, has the support of ASNA, Holiday Golf, Callaway Golf, Puppies Andorra and Handmade Custom Clubs.

November 10, 2014 – To mark the first anniversary of Williams Racing Golf, on Friday 7th of November the company held a celebration at its global headquarters in El Masnou (Barcelona, Spain), to which its closest friends and customers were invited.

Williams-wind-tunnelMyGolfWay.com was there in person to see the stunning new range of Williams golf clubs and the first collection of clothing. Amongst the personalities were Ricardo Galí, CEO of Williams Racing Golf, and Gerard Pera, Spanish Long Drive specialist and brand ambassador, whom we greeted personally, and also viewed them in the spot broadcast by the CNN Living Golf programme several times between 6th and 9th of November, coinciding with the Grand Prix Formula 1 at Interlagos, Brazil. The spot shows the brand’s vocation for power and distance, from the F1 R&D team to the study of the science and materials in their racing cars, to the application of these in their modern aerodynamic drivers, with Gerard Pera and the new MR inside the wind tunnel.

The new MR Williams Series (Rebound Modulus), which will be launched in December 2014, with the drivers of the Players, Ladies and Gold Series, announces a new era in the engineering and construction of golf drivers, taking advantage of the advanced F1 aerodynamics to achieve increased clubhead speed and improved performance.

Along with the drivers come the putters with the British flag, the Double-U wedges, and the first apparel collection of the Williams Racing Golf project developed by another member of the team, Marc Pejó. This collection includes shirts of fine fabrics, high quality polo shirts and technical clothing, with a racing style accompanied by details for the golf game, and will be launched in March 2015.

Here at the offices of El Masnou other staff member, Jason Stewart, gave us a guided tour through his impressive clubmaking workshop, and then discussed with Gerard Pera the virtues of the new MR driver, which has already been presented in professional shows such as Golf Europe in Germany and the Nordic Golf Fair in Sweden, as the premier of the worldwide release.

The Williams Racing Golf party finished with a friendly draw of golf products amongst the participants, and we took a picture of the company team.

In boxes, from left to right: Ian Stewart (Manager of Manufacturing Procedures), Jason Stewart (Manufacturing Manager & Shaft Development), Pedro Rísquez (Clubmaking), Yolanda Córdoba (Inside Sales & Customer Service Manager), Ricardo Galí (CEO), Marc Pejó (CCO) and Juanjo Rísquez (Clubmaking).

They are seven of the 22 members of the Williams Racing Golf super staff, because obviously not all of them could be there:

Victor Betran (Marketing & Web Manager), Sergio Hoyuela (IS), Tom Potter (Licensing Manager), Neville Hong (VP Sales Asia), Peter Wallgren (VP Sales EMEA), Scott Reid (VP Sales Americas), Frank McCarthy (VP Sales Oceania), Stewart Hsu (VP New Product Development), Emma Cabrera-Bello (Brand Communications & Media Manager), Fernando Barcelón (Purchasing Manager), Darryl Da Matta (Sales South Africa), Carlo Belli (CFD Analyst at Williams), Daniel Smith (Williams F1 Team Leader Aerodynamics), Nigel Walkley (Williams F1 Materials Developer) and Eugenio Canals de Echenique (Board President).

Long Drive – Success of Amateur Long Drive Festival at Izki Golf, in Spain

LDA-portada-Long-Drive-Izki

September 16, 2014 – Long Drive is no longer just for strong hitters or professional competitors. We’ve been shown this in Izki Golf, Urturi (Álava, Spain), where a new event has taken root for golf amateurs in Spain. It’s been a great weekend focused on the long drive, promoted by the Power Academy of Gerard Pera and the first edition of the Spanish Amateur Long Drive Cup, which has attracted great interest in this specialty.

In this first event of Amateur Long Drive at Izki Golf, backed by the Federación Alavesa de Golf, thirty golfers participated with plenty of public to enjoy a great golf festival, surrounded by music, shows, demos, barbecues, raffles, prizes… and the challenge for everyone to send the golf ball even further.

The event began with great expectation on Saturday 13th September. The participants in the Power Academy learned about the theory of power applied to golf to improve distance from a professional expert as Gerard Pera. On a stage outside, the Spanish Long Drive Champion emphatically conveyed the essential technical and physical matters of Long Drive.

Then the action began, applying the technical concepts on the driving range, including video swing analysis. It was an intense day that ended, in the afternoon, with the participants playing the 18 holes of the golf course with Gerard. And all enlivened by the presence of leading brands such as Munich footwear, SKLZ training products and the XXIO and Srixon drivers in their tent with demo clubs.

Then it was time for the competition on Sunday 14th, in a very different environment to what the pros are used to, as it was focused on enjoy a day of golf, where all the amateurs can take part learning and playing. But before, a brief chat by Gerard Pera served to introduce the contestants on the concept of Amateur Long Drive, and the importance of fitness with a series of technical recommendations for improving the driving distance. Gerard then displayed his explosive drive (hitting a ball to 399y!), his iron game, and even hitting long distances with the putter, as well as entertaining the show by exploding a watermelon.

After the barbecue came the Finals of the Spanish Amateur Long Drive Cup, with the top five in each category: Four balls per player in a maximum time of 2 minutes, to a field 44y wide, counting only the distance achieved with the longest ball staying on the fairway. The Bushnell rangefinders were out there working when one of the favourites in theSenior Category, the Spanish player Juan Pagan, the amateur Long Drive Spanish champion of 2012, went to 310,6y in the qualifying round in the morning.

It was a shame that he couldn’t do it again in the finals when he came in to win, but couldn’t keep any golf ball on the grid, despite a shot of 345y that finished out of bounds. The champions of the first Spanish Amateur Long Drive Cup by categories are:

Under-21 Category

  • Champion: Luis Pereda, 295,27y

Two intense days of Long Drive, morning and afternoon, where amateur golfers have been able to get out of their heads that the Long Drive is only for strong golfers. An event designed for amateur players, even if they don’t hit that far. The first players have already started to see it in Izki, but more and more players will find out that any golfer has potential for improving distance and accuracy with the driver.

The organization of Buengolpe, Power Academy, musicaparamiboda.com, Viajes Artaza and Izki Golf, and the sponsors of the Diputación Foral de Álava, Srixon, Lea and Donnay, can all feel proud about having accomplished the target of bringing the Long Drive to the amateur world. The experience of the participants, the real stars of the festival, was phenomenal and they were quick to ask for a repetition of the event next year, which will surely take on a bigger dimension in 2015.
