Galvin Green – ‘Serious Golfers’ better equipped to play more often, says a new survey

February 3, 2019 – Serious Golfers are better equipped than ever with high performance clothing designed to help them play the game more often even in extreme conditions, according to new research commissioned by leading golf apparel brand Galvin Green among passionate American and British players.

Research undertaken by Sports Marketing Surveys Inc. last October canvassed more than 5,000 men (86%) and women (14%) on both sides of the Atlantic who identify themselves as ‘Serious Golfers’ about their playing and buying habits, plus the garments they see as essential for playing the game more often.

They claim that being a Serious Golfer comes down primarily to ‘seeking to reduce the handicap figure’ (86%); followed by ‘playing at least once a week’ (69%); ‘practicing at the driving range regularly’ (58%); and ‘playing in all weather conditions’ (42%). On average, American Serious Golfers hold lower handicaps and have been playing much longer, while nearly half those British players who identify with the title (49%) view ‘playing in all weather’ as reason to be called ‘Serious’ and a third will play even in high winds.

In terms of protective clothing, the vast majority of Serious Golfers (81%) own a pair of waterproof trousers (74% US/89% UK); well over half (59%) keep an unlined waterproof jacket (68% US/48% UK); and nearly two-thirds (63%) carry a lined waterproof jacket for extra warmth (58% US/68% UK). Interestingly, more than three out of four (78%) are equipped with a windproof jacket (82% US/73% UK); and one in three also have a pair of windproof trousers (33%).

“This survey confirms how serious golfers value golf clothing as an essential part of their equipment to improve scoring and enjoyment out on the course,” said Steve Hendren, President of Galvin Green USA. “Our 2019 range of premium clothing reflects this with an exciting new innovative in outerwear and improve comfort and styling throughout the entire range.”

More than half of Serious Golfers (57%) view golf clothing as an essential item of golf equipment that helps them play more often, while only 13% disagree. The positive view is held more strongly amongst the British (67%), against 50% in the US, while only 2% don’t check weather forecasts before playing.

The main reasons cited for the growing importance of golf clothing are ‘waterproof and windproof protection is increasingly vital’ (80%); ‘new fabric technology is more comfortable & breathable’ (76%); and ‘having complementary layers can enhance performance’ (54%). They are also conscious of the fact that ‘looking the part adds to the feel-good factor’ (49%); and ‘the lightness of modern gear means you can carry more options’ (47%).

When it comes to purchasing golf clothing, most Serious Golfers (45%) buy new garments every 1-6 months, with one in four across both nations spending once each month. The majority in America buy from an on-course Pro Shop (35%), while in Britain it’s split between on-course and online retailers.

In choosing the best quality clothing brands, Galvin Green ranked second overall – No.1 in Britain and among the top five in the US. “Being a relatively new brand in the world’s largest golf market, we’re encouraged by the awareness and perception of our brand and its credentials here in the States,” added Steve Hendren. “We will continue to focus on improving our brand recognition here in the US, so more golfers can experience the unmatched premium performance of Galvin Green products.”

More findings from the Serious Golfer survey are contained in The Galvin Green Golf Clothing Report that charts the progress of the game’s apparel over the past 150 years, from the days of Young Tom Morris to the latest EDGE range of fashionable performance gear.

IGTM – German golfers spend the most on their golf holidays, new research reveals

December 14, 2017 – German golfers spent more on their ‘non-domestic’ golf holidays in the last 12 months than their counterparts from the UK, France and Sweden, with an average spend of €2,041, a new survey has revealed.

The report produced by Sports Marketing Surveys Inc., the official research partner of International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), was revealed today at the event and highlighted the average spend by German golfers has increased by 25% when compared with survey results from 2012.

Based on responses from more than 9,500 core golfers (those playing at least 12 times per year) across Europe’s four largest golf markets, the report also shows that German golfers booked longer golf breaks, with an average stay of 6.9 days.

French golfers spent the second most on their golf holidays, with an average spend of €1,777, an increase of 13% from 2012, and stayed 5.7 days, while Swedish golfers spent €1,080 with a stay of 6.6 days. UK golfers spent the least with an average spend of €946 per golf holiday, down 12% from 2012, and a length of stay of 5.8 days.

Commenting on the research, Peter Grimster, Exhibition Manager at Reed Travel Exhibitions, said: “As with the survey we commissioned in 2012, this 2017 report sheds a light on the behaviours of golfers from Europe’s largest golf markets.

“While golfers from the UK and Sweden have reduced their average spend slightly over the last five years, the results clearly demonstrate the ongoing opportunities for tour operators to sell to an audience of core golfers, particularly in Germany and France, who continue to spend a considerable amount of money when they book their golf holidays.”

The research also indicated that Spain remains the first choice of golf destination, with at least 14% of all golfers from each market visiting the country for a golf break in the last 12 months. The second most popular golf destination for golfers from the UK, Sweden and France was Portugal, while for German golfers, the second most visited destination was Austria, with 13.4% of people taking a golf holiday to the country in 2017.

The survey also asked golfers from all four countries to select potential emerging popular golf destinations, with South Africa, Turkey and Thailand all identified as key growth markets. Of the UK golfers surveyed, 39.1% identified Turkey as a key emerging market, while more than 24% of Swedish and German golfers chose South Africa as a place they would like to visit for a golf holiday in the future.

Peter Grimster added: “Although it has been a regular feature on the European Tour schedule for many years, it is interesting to see South Africa continue its emergence as a key market for European golfers. With a growing number of South African destinations exhibiting at the 2018 edition of IGTM, it is pleasing to know that IGTM continues to accurately reflect the global golf tourism industry.”

Statistics – Sports Marketing Surveys reveals upsurge in UK golfing numbers

ROUNDSPLAYED-2014

February 13, 2015 – Leading sports research company Sports Marketing Surveys Inc. (SMS Inc.) has announced increased figures in its Golf Rounds Played in UK study for 2014 compared with the previous two years.

With temperatures above average for the duration of Q4, and no major sporting events plying for the UK golfers attention, the number of golf rounds played in the final (three) months of 2014 were up 4.5% vis-à-vis the same period in 2013. This resulted in a year-on-year growth of 3.5%.

The fourth quarter began as Q3 had ended, with all regions retaining positive golfing numbers, with the exception of Scotland. This diminution was eliminated in November when the same region boasted greatly increased statistics, as did all other regions in England and Wales.

The end of year pressures, coupled with the varied and often wet weather generated a mixed month in December, in terms of the amount of golf being played.

At the end of the third quarter, the amount of golf played in the UK exhibited encouraging progression versus 2013. This positive growth continued in the fourth quarter, and resulted in year-end numbers which were up on 2013 (3.5%) and 2012 (1.4%) respectively.

Richard Payne, Senior Manager of Sports Accounts at SMS Inc. commented: “After announcing the positive Q3 numbers (5.3% up vs Q3 2013), we knew that unless the weather turned dramatically in Q4, that we would be able to publicise some positive news to the UK golf industry. Hopefully this intelligence gives golf a boost going into the 2015 season.”

IGTM – A research reveals that Spain continues to be the first golf destination

IGTM-Estudio-Golf-Europa

October 24, 2014 – Golfers in four key European markets take more golf breaks now than they did in 2009, according to new research. The survey, commissioned by Reed Travel Exhibitions, organizers of the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), was conducted with core golfers (those playing at least 12 times per year) in the largest European golf markets: France, Germany, Sweden and the UK.

The research, conducted on behalf of IGTM by Sports Marketing Surveys Inc. in September 2014, found at least 50% of golfers in France (54%) and Germany (50%) take more golf breaks now than in 2009, while the figures for Sweden and the UK were 47% and 40% respectively.

The findings also indicate that Spain continues to be the first choice of golf destination in each of the country’s surveyed with at least 30% of golfers from France (30%), Sweden (42%) and the UK (36%), having been to Spain for a golf break in the last 12 months.

The second most popular golf destination for golfers surveyed in the UK and Sweden was Portugal with 23% and 13% respectively, while for the French it was Morocco (18%) and for Germans it was Austria (18%).

Commenting on the findings, IGTM Exhibition Manager, Peter Grimster, said: “The findings demonstrate the buoyant state of golf tourism at the present time and the opportunities for tour operators to sell to an audience of core golfers who are travelling for golf more frequently.”

IGTM-Estudio-1

IGTM 2014 takes place in Italy on October 27-30, at the Villa Erba Exhibition and Conference Centre, on the banks of Lake Como, where a full presentation of the report’s findings will be made on Tuesday, October 28 at 14.55.
