July 14, 2018 – The second round of the 2018 Scottish Open this week, under the label of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, provided magnificent cards throughout the day, like the 63 shots of the leader, the English player Robert Rock, and of his compatriots Eddie Pepperell and Aaron Rai, and especially the 62 of the young Scottish local Connor Syme, who was then announced record holder of the course.
That was because nobody expected his record to be beaten on the same day. But the Japanese Hideto Tanihara, coming from behind but totally inspired made it even better, scoring a card of 61 shots (-9): It’s the new record of the Gullane Golf Club in East Lothian, surpassing the 62 that Syme established just a few hours before.
The 39 year-old Honma Golf staff player, who has already qualified for The Open next week, came on with an incredible performance that even made the Tour statisticians think if it would be possible to achieve a 59 for the first time in the European Tour history, since he was 9 under par walking to the 16 hole. In other words, Hideto could even have made it with a couple more birdies in the 16th, 17th or 18th holes, but all were pares, and the record stayed put.
In addition to the eagle at the 2nd hole, Hideto Tanihara added seven birdies and ten pars, with 29 strokes in the first nine and 32 in the seconds, to complete his card with 61 shots, which also constitutes his personal record round in all his European Tour Curriculum.
After the 72 shots of his first round, this 61 has served him to scale 123 positions in the standings, getting through the cut easily and even having some option of victory from the 15th place tied, with -7 to 6 shots from the leader, and still two rounds from the conclusion of the event.
His best result this year has been a Top-10, 9th in the Open de España, and he is now in a position to improve it. So, it’s time to take a look at the golf clubs inside his Honma Golf bag. Let’s go!
