Club de Golf Alcanada – Ready to put Challenge Tour hopefuls to the test as final looms

October 7, 2024 – Challenge Tour hopefuls have just four more tournaments to earn their spot at Club de Golf Alcanada as the acclaimed Mallorca venue prepares to host the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Finalsupported by the R&A for the third consecutive year.

Taking place from October 31 to November 3, the showpiece end-of-season event will see the top 45 players on the Road to Mallorca rankings battle it out for just 20 precious DP World Tour cards.

Competitors will need to be at their best to earn a place on Europe’s premier tour for next season, however, thanks to Alcanada’s challenging Robert Trent Jones II-designed course. Known for its fast greens and dramatic views, the par-72 layout measures 7,108 yards from the championship tees and is sure to be one of the toughest tests that the Challenge Tour hopefuls face all season.

Alcanada has been the home of the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final every year since 2022 after hosting the event for the first time in 2019. The explosive finale of the ‘Road to Mallorca’ has become a staple of the tour, which has been a breeding ground for talents including Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka.

Club de Golf Alcanada first opened for play in 2003 and quickly earned a reputation as one of Spain’s finest layouts, bolstered by stunning views out to sea and the iconic Alcanada Lighthouse.

This year, a field of players from over a dozen countries will hope to follow in the footsteps of Italy’s Francesco Laporta and England’s Nathan Kimsey and Marco Penge by winning the curtain closer at Alcanada.

Golf East Mallorca – Mallorca’s finest Flock to Alcanada for GEM Winter Slam climax

February 7, 2024 – Club de Golf Alcanada will welcome some of Mallorca’s best amateur golfers when it stages the final of the annual Golf East Mallorca Winter Slam on February 8, sponsored by UNUS Golf and Skechers GO GOLF.

Getting underway in November, the popular series will conclude at Alcanada after an eight-event tour of four leading Mallorca golf venues: Alcanada, Pula Golf, Club de Golf Son Servera and Capdepera Golf.

After the final round, entrants in all four categories – Female, Scratch, 1st Classification Male and 2nd Classification Male – who have played at least one round at each course will be invited to a lunch and prize-giving ceremony.

Alcanada is no stranger to hosting golf’s rising stars – including as home of the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024 – and will stage the prestigious Copa SM El Rey, Spain’s biggest amateur golf tournament, later this month. (February)

Opened in 2003 and boasting a course designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jnr, Alcanada is the island’s only true coastal golf club. The par-72 layout slopes gently down to the Mediterranean Sea, where the emblematic Alcanada Lighthouse has stood on an island just offshore for over 160 years.

Meanwhile, Pula Golf – host of two events on the season’s GEM Winter Slam schedule – has its own iconic name attached in the form of José María Olazábal, who redesigned the par-72 course from 2004 – 2006. Pula is well-known in golfing circles as home of the Mallorca Classic on the DP World Tour (then European Tour) between 2003 and 2007.

Challenge Tour – The Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final to return to Club de Golf Alcanada in 2023


November 8, 2022 – The Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A will again take place at Club de Golf Alcanada when the Road to Mallorca finale returns to the Balearic island in 2023.

The Alcúdia venue hosted the end-of-season showpiece for the second time last week, after a successful staging in 2019, and the European Challenge Tour has selected the picturesque layout to take on hosting duties once again next year in the first of an extended four-year agreement with the Federación Balear de Golf.

Club de Golf Alcanada, named after the nearby island which is home to the area’s iconic lighthouse, was designed by legendary course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr and opened for play in 2003. Rated by many as the best golf course in Mallorca, Alcanada boasts world-class practice facilities and first-rate amenities, including the island’s only Toptracer-equipped driving range.

The Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final sees the top 45 on the Road to Mallorca Rankings battle it out for one of 20 life-changing DP World Tour cards.

July 2, 2022 – Club de Golf Alcanada, widely regarded as the best golf course in Mallorca, and one of the finest in Spain, has completed a multi-product installation of the world’s number-one driving range technology, Toptracer Range.

The golf club – which will play host to the European Challenge Tour’s Grand Final in 2022 – becomes the first driving range to be powered by Toptracer technology in Mallorca, in what is a landmark installation for golf on the island.

The club’s Alcanada Golf Academy will now offer golfers a refined, high-tech practice experience, following the installation of 10 monitor bays, along with 30 metres of Toptracer Range Mobile enabled grass tee along the front of the range.

Challenge Tour – The Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A returns to Alcanada Golf

January 10, 2022 – The Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A will return to Club de Golf Alcanada in 2022, having previously held the event back in 2019 which saw Italian Francesco Laporta win the Rolex Grand Final and Road to Mallorca Rankings double.

The final event of this year’s Road to Mallorca schedule will take place from November 3-6, 2022, as players look to secure one of the coveted 20 DP World Tour cards for 2023.

The European Challenge Tour has historically produced a plethora of golfing stars, including 2018 Ryder Cup Captain Thomas Bjørn, 2016 Open Champion Henrik Stenson and two-time Ryder Cup player Tommy Fleetwood.

The stunning Alcanada course, based in the north of the Balearic Island of Mallorca, measures 6,499 metres and offers eye catching views of the lighthouse in the Bay of Alcúdia. The coastal layout, which weaves between the hills and the groves, was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr.

Alcanada Golf – Joan Gonzalez Camarero-Nuñez, new head coach of the Mallorcan golf course

January 14, 2021 – Club de Golf Alcanada has a new leading light at its Lighthouse Golf Academy following the appointment of Joan González Camarero-Nuñez as new head professional at the top Mallorcan course.

Camarero-Nuñez, who has been a PGA-certified professional since 2014, took up his new position last month and has replaced John Verhappen, who has returned to The Netherlands.

The Spaniard, a four-time winner of the Balearic Professional Pairs Championship between 2014 and 2017 and the 2018 Balearic Islands Professional Individual champion, coaches in Spanish, Catalan, English and German and he has wasted no time in getting to know Alcanada’s members, offering a series of exclusive free one-hour classes.

Joan Gonzalez Camarero-Nuñez said: “It’s a great privilege to join a club with such a great reputation as Alcanada. With a world-class golf course coupled with outstanding teaching facilities, it offers one of the best golf experiences in Europe and I’m really excited about what lies ahead.”

Alcanada Golf is widely regarded as one of the best courses in Spain with spectacular panoramic sea views over the Alcudia Bay towards its iconic picturesque lighthouse. October 31, 2017 – Visitor numbers are up by more than 10 per cent. Club de Golf Alcanada signed a three-year contract with TagMarshal, a course management system which on average should speed up play by 14 minutes thanks to its tracking tag that clips to golf bags and provides real-time data.

The prestigious 7,108-yard, Robert Trent Jones Jr-designed layout is the only one on the island of Mallorca next to the sea and its popularity continues to grow with people flocking from all over Europe.

Club de Golf Alcanada has won an array of awards since opening 14 years ago and the course again proved a hit with highly-respected German magazine Golf Journal readers after being voted favourite European course for a staggering seventh time earlier this year.

Kristoff Both, director of golf at Alcanada, said: “We are in a very fortunate position geographically as the course enjoys spectacular views being beside the sea. But as a test of golf, Alcanada has always been hugely popular with visitors as it is a real test for good golfers, while also being enjoyed by those with higher handicaps. May 4, 2016 – Mallorca’s award-winning Club de Golf Alcanada is set to take its five-star experience to another level after revealing plans to invest a further €250,000 in its golf facilities in 2016.

The stunning venue in the north of Mallorca remains as popular as ever with golfers across Europe, and aims to build on its success by continuing to upgrade amenities on and off the course over the coming months.

In addition to investing €150,000 on updating and adding to its fleet of greenkeeping machines, Alcanada will spend a further €50,000 on work to improve the irrigation and buggy paths around the renowned layout.

And members and guests are in for a further treat later in the year when the club unveils its eagerly-awaited new ‘Lighthouse Bar’ halfway house. Situated by the tenth tee, the new facility is scheduled to open before the autumn and will offer players the chance to make the most of the unrivalled panoramic views that Alcanada is famous for across the continent.

The latest work is part of an on-going investment programme at Alcanada, with a new starter house, two new bridges on the first and ninth holes and an independent irrigation cycle for the greens all having been installed on the course over the last two years.
