Solheim Cup – Gleneagles wins the bidding process for 2019 Solheim Cup

October 29, 2015 – Scotland has won the right to host The Solheim Cup in 2019 and the 16th edition of the greatest team event in women’s golf will be played at the world famous PGA Centenary Course at The Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire.

After an extensive and very competitive bidding process, the final decision saw Scotland’s submission up against a strong bid from Sweden, which nominated The Bro Hof Slott Golf Club as its proposed venue.

Earlier in the year, ten countries – Denmark, England, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and Wales – submitted expressions of interest in hosting the 2019 event, the next time it is held in Europe.

Following official site inspection visits to Gleneagles and Bro Hof Slott, the Ladies European Tour (LET) Evaluation Committee this week presented their recommendations to the LET Board for ratification.

Ivan Khodabakhsh, chief executive of Ladies European Tour said: “I want to congratulate the Scotland bid team for their work. It was an extremely close decision and our heartfelt thanks go to our friends from Sweden for their hugely impressive bid. The Bro Hof Slott Golf Club is one of Europe’s very finest courses and we look forward to working with them in the future.

“The competitive nature of the bidding process for the 2019 event is testimony to the growth in interest in women’s professional golf and women’s sport in general. The Solheim Cup has grown to be the biggest event in the women’s game delivering outstanding value to its partners at a local, national and international level.”

Commenting on the news that the Ladies European Tour’s Board voted in favour of Scotland, The Right Honourable Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland MSP, said: “This is tremendous news, not only for golf tourism and events in Scotland but for Scotland as a whole. As a nation we take a huge amount of pride in welcoming major events to our country and in women’s golf they don’t come any bigger than The Solheim Cup.

“The outstanding success of 2014 Ryder Cup still looms large in the memory and I am delighted that Gleneagles and Scotland will once again play host to a major international team golf event. It will help cement Scotland’s reputation as the Home of Golf and the perfect stage for major golf events and help inspire a new generation of children to take up the game invented in their home country.”

Scotland’s bid, which was led by the EventScotland team within VisitScotland’s Events Directorate and backed by The Scottish Government, was submitted in August and received huge support from stars across the golfing, sporting and media spectrum.

Solheim Cup – Ten countries have interest to host The 2019 Solheim Cup

March 8, 2015 – The Ladies European Tour has received record interest in hosting The 2019 Solheim Cup in Europe.

Ten countries have submitted expressions of interest for the biennial transatlantic matches. They are Denmark, England, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and Wales. It is intended that the 2019 host will be announced towards the end of 2015, and following the playing of the 14th edition of the matches in Germany.

Mark Casey, the Ladies European Tour’s European Solheim Cup Director said: “We are delighted with the response from the interested nations all across Europe which shows the tremendous appetite for watching Europe take on the USA at golf. We look forward to working closely with all interested parties over the coming months to provide each country with the opportunity to present their strongest possible bid”.

Ivan Khodabakhsh, the Ladies European Tour’s Chief Executive added “With the European team’s victory at the past two editions of The Solheim Cup in Ireland and Colorado and the growth in women’s golf across the world, The Solheim Cup is developing into a unique women’s sport brand globally. We are therefore very confident of a strong host for The 2019 Solheim Cup.”

The 2019 Solheim Cup will be the 16^th edition of the biennial encounter – first played in 1990 – between Europe and the United States. The 2015 Solheim Cup will be played at Golf Club St. Leon-Rot in Germany on September 18-20 this year, preceded by the PING Junior Solheim Cup matches on September 14-15. The 2017 Solheim Cup will be played at Des Moines Golf and Country Club in Iowa, USA.

Solheim Cup – Bidding process for The 2019 Solheim Cup tees off

October 31, 2014 – On behalf of the Ladies European Tour has been formally announced the launch of the bidding process for The 2019 Solheim Cup and PING Junior Solheim Cup Matches.

The Solheim Cup is the greatest women’s professional golf event in the world where teams from Europe and USA compete bi-annually in a tournament identical to the highly successful Ryder Cup. The tournament, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year in Germany, has become one of the highlights of the golfing calendar. With attendance figures surpassing 100,000 spectators and enormous media and television coverage not only in Europe and the USA but across the globe, The Solheim Cup is fast developing into one of the leading women’s sporting events in the world. The PING Junior Solheim Cup is an integral part of the tournament week and played between the leading U18 girls from Europe and USA and staged the same week and in close proximity to The Solheim Cup.

The Solheim Cup combines the tradition and prestige of the game of golf with passion for one’s country. This biennial, trans-Atlantic team match-play competition features the best U.S.-born players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour and the best European members from the Ladies European Tour (LET).

The Solheim Cup is named in honour of Karsten Solheim, the founder of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, which makes Ping golf equipment. In 1990, the Solheim family, in conjunction with the LPGA and the LET, developed the concept and became the sponsor for The Solheim Cup, professional golf’s international match-play competition for women. Held every two years, the event has grown into the most prestigious international women’s professional golf team event. The Solheim Cup is the most highly coveted trophy in women’s professional golf team competition; some of the most memorable moments in women’s golf have happened during Solheim Cups, and berths on the U.S. and European teams are highly coveted by players from both organizations.

The 2015 Solheim Cup will take place at Golf Course St. Leon-Rot in Germany. The European Team enters the competition holding the Cup and will need 14 points to retain it, with the U.S. Team needing 14½ points to regain the coveted Waterford Crystal prize. The U.S. team holds an 8-5 lead in the series, which began in 1990.
