Callaway Golf – Zanotti wins maiden European Tour title in front of Stenson
July 1, 2014 – Staff Professionals Fabrizio Zanotti and Henrik Stenson, both armed with Callaway and Odyssey products, went head-to-head to decide the 2014 BMW International Open title. It marked a remarkable Sunday for #teamCallaway, with other Staff Professionals Danny Willett, Emiliano Grillo, Thomas Björn and Pablo Larrazabal also finishing in the Top-10.
But it was Paraguayan Zanotti (31) who took his maiden European Tour title after Stenson, the current World Number 2, and previous winner of the event (in a play-off!) in 2006, took the match down the fifth play-off hole, after both had finished the tournament at Golf Club Gut Lärchenhof near Cologne on 19-under par.
Fabrizio becomes the first golfer from Paraguay to win on the Tour and joins fellow Staff Professionals, David Horsey and Danny Willett, in making the BMW International Open their maiden European Tour win. It’s also worth noting that 8 of the last 9 winners of the tournament are either current Callaway Staffers or were Callaway staffers when they won.
“I’ve been playing very well in the last few weeks so I knew that if I had a good round I would have a good chance. I have been working a lot and trying to bring up my confidence to get to this moment and finally I am here,” said Fabrizio Zanotti, who earned €333,330 for his efforts.
Zanotti was the only player out of the four initial play-off contenders to avoid carding a bogey in the fourth round – he shot a flawless seven-under par 65, to match other rounds of 72, 67, 65 – and he maintained that statistic in the play-off.
Neil Howie, Managing Director of Callaway EMEA, said: “What a great weekend of golf for Callaway and even more so for Fabrizio; an amazing maiden victory at such a prestigious tournament. We congratulate him, and all our Staff Professionals, for making this event such a cliff-hanger finish.”
Odyssey’s position as the #1PutterOnTour was also never in doubt at this event, with 70 Tour Professionals (45% of the field) trusting an Odyssey on the greens, with eight players in the Top 10 and ties.
