Review: Cleveland 588 RTX CB Black Pearl wedge

Test del wedge Cleveland 588 RTX CB

June 28, 2013 – It’s been a leader in the wedge category for over 30 years and is still at the top in 2013. Working on the base of its popular 588 Series, which worked very well, Cleveland Golf‘s has made improvements and offers us new models which outperform the previous ones. These are the 588 RTX Bladed, 588 RTX CB and 588 Forged RTG.

To test it we have analyzed one of them, the Cleveland 588 RTX CB Black Pearl, black in colour, with a cavity back and the new ROTEX face technology.

Cleveland explains that the ROTEX face is a directionally milled pattern which gives greater roughness and durability to the face. This is a dimensionally optimized surface for even more friction at the moment of impact. The U-Groves, developed in collaboration with Tour players, are more precise and 16% larger in order to maximise the spin on critical scoring shots, especially out of the rough or the bunker, and in wet conditions.

It distributes more weighting towards the perimeter and along the sole to increase the forgiveness on off-centre hits. And finally, a reverse C sole, with a constant width throughout its length, is combined with heel and toe grinds to improve performance from the bunkers or the deep rough.

Carlos Vivas, professional of Sant Cugat CG (Barcelona, Spain) and Technical Director of the Junior Golf Academy by Paula Marti & Carlos Vivas, is the player who gives us his verdict on this modern short game tool. With a RTX 588 CB Black Pearl of 52° loft and 10º bounce he hit a few balls from 50 metres, and then 5 metres to the green, leaving them in a radius of two meters around the pin.

Then he said:

  • The first thing that strikes me is that it gives me a softer touch compared to my usual wedge. It gives you a very soft feel, and provides a strong sensation of control.
  • The performance around the green is also very well achieved, developing good effects to stop the ball when it drops. With these grooves you have more spin on chips, pitches and half swing shots from any lie.
  • The cavity back doesn’t bother me. You can’t see it in the stance, and it gives you a little more forgiveness in miss-hits. Yes it is true that it doesn’t feel as much a blade as I’m used to in the blasters, but certainly the cavity gives you more margin of error, which will be very helpful for the amateur players.
  • I can see that it glides over the grass very well. Altogether, I think it is a wedge that’s very easy to play, and that gives you very good results.

Most players will like its feel, its effect ability and forgiveness, and the versatility of the sole.

Nothing against, we really liked it. Perhaps just mention that it doesn’t offer as many loft / bounce options as the RTX 588 Bladed.
