Olympic Games – The IOC approves the 25 main sports for Tokyo 2020

September 11, 2013 –  The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the 25 main sports for the programme of the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020, to which golf and rugby seven are added, and one more is to be decided.

There are 28 sports that make up the programme of the greatest sports event, of which 25 are classified as main, for which the list was approved last Sunday by the 125 IOC Session which has taken place in Buenos Aires.

The list includes athletics, swimming, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, gymnastics, volleyball, handball, archery, badminton, basketball, boxing, fencing, football, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon and weightlifting.

To these are added golf and rugby seven, which will premiere in Rio 2016, but the IOC guarantees a minimum of two appearances, so they are part of the so-called non-regular sports package.

This Sunday the 125 IOC Session must choose between wrestling, baseball-softball and squash which will be the sport number 28 in the competition programme of Tokyo 2020.
