Instruction – How to choose your golf instructor? (I): Compatibility
Just as golf equipment advances through technology, so does golf instruction. Just as we find a great variety of drivers, irons, putters and golf balls to choose from, although we might not aware of it, there is also quite an ample choice of golf teachers – two or three per club, for sure. And choosing one is not an easy job if you’re not clear about your preferences and requirements.
To help you, under the heading “How to choose your golf instructor?” we are beginning a series of short articles outlining the basics you should consider in order to find your ideal instructor.
1. COMPATIBILITY
It is essential to be sure that you get on with each other well… but at all levels. That includes character, common targets, similar views about the game, and especially the ability of the teacher to identify and address your personal needs as a golfer.
Before you write the name of a golf pro in your diary, explore what professionals work in your area. Also find out about the teaching systems that exist and which you might prefer (TPI, Stack & Tilt, Golf BioDynamics, AimPoint Golf, etc.). You can ask your golfer friends and colleagues about good teachers in the nearby courses and the systems they use. They’ll give you the first indications on prices, prestige, academies, systems, philosophy, even the improvements that they’ve achieved thanks to the instructor who gave them lessons.
If you get along with your playing colleagues, and they tell you that they got on well with the instructor, you may getting a lot closer to finding yours.
So, you can then take the step of establishing the first contact with the pro, ask if he or she has time to review your game, and see what chances you have of improving so that you can reach your goals.
A good teacher will be happy to meet you and check your swing, before getting to work on helping you develop your best golf.
