Nike Golf – Rory McIlroy’s arsenal to win WGC-Cadillac Match Play
May 5, 2015 – The world’s number one golfer, Rory McIlroy has delivered a reminder – he still is ranked as the best in the world. In a grueling week at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco (U.S.), McIlroy won all seven of his matches to claim his first WGC Match Play title.
“I’m really proud of myself with how I showed a lot of character early on with coming back from deficits,” Rory McIlroy said. “I played really solid golf. My second WGC and first win in the States this year. I couldn’t be happier.”
McIlroy, who became just the second player in WGC Match Play history to win as the No. 1 seed, relied heavily on his Nike Method 006 putter to help him come out on top. In his semifinal round, McIlroy sank a 44-yard putt for eagle on the 18th hole to advance to the Championship Match for the second time in his career.
“This week I felt like I got better each and every day,” Rory McIlroy said. “I think that was more to do with more sharpness around the greens and putting and taking advantage of the opportunities I was giving myself.”
The Northern Ireland native used his Nike Vapor Pro driver to earn great distance off the tees. The Vapor Pro driver blends three key technologies: Nike’s new FlyBeam reinforced Covert Cavity Back design, a re-engineered Compression Channel and FlexLoft 2. All of these are vital to the golf athlete in achieving the ultimate in hitting their window of distance, speed and launch conditions.
McIlroy relied on the Nike RZN Black golf ball for control and accuracy. The ball features an innovative Speedlock RZN core which was created with an interlocking core design to help promote better energy transfer between the layers at impact for faster ball speed, longer distance and more stability into the wind.
On the body, McIlroy sported the Nike Lunar Control 3, a shoe he helped inspire, as well as apparel from Nike Golf’s Performance Collection.
The victory marks McIlroy’s 10th career PGA Tour victory and his second worldwide win in 2015. His first title came at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour in February.
