Challenge Tour – Club de Golf Playa Serena will host the 2023 Challenge de España
July 7, 2023 – The European Challenge Tour has announced that Club de Golf Playa Serena will host the Challenge de España from September 7-10, 2023.
Club de Golf Playa Serena, situated in the town of Roquetas de Mar close to Almeria, offers spectacular coastal views and it will open the doors to the Challenge Tour for the very first time this year.
The Challenge de España comes at a vital time in the Challenge Tour season where players are fighting for a place in the top 20 on the Road to Mallorca Rankings, which will earn them a place on the DP World Tour in 2024.
Jaime Salaverri, President of the Professionals Committee of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation so said: “The fact that it will be played in September, and that there are only four more tournaments left to finish the season, makes the Challenge de España even more important, and it is in the spotlight worldwide. And in that spotlight we have a Spaniard, Manuel Elvira, number 2 of the Challenge Tour, who is having a great season, with two consecutive second places in the last tournaments, of the 6 top 10 that he has this year, and Iván Cantero who is 15th. One more year, the support of the Federation is reflected in the players who make it to the DP World Tour, and these weeks will be crucial to get more Spaniards to achieve it“.
Miguel García Soriano, President of the Playa Serena Golf Club assures that “we are very proud that the Challenge Tour is coming to Almeria and we have made every effort to ensure that the course is in the conditions that a tournament of this magnitude deserves, working together with the Green Section of the RFEG and the agronomists of the Challenge Tour. I believe that everyone who comes to Roquetas de Mar will be delighted to discover not only the magnificent golf course we have, but also the area, the climate and the gastronomy typical of our province. For us, we are really excited to receive those who will be, very soon, winners of the DP World Tour“.
Jamie Hodges, Challenge Tour Director, said: “It’s exciting to be able to take the Challenge Tour to Club de Golf Playa Serena for the Challenge de España. We are grateful to Club de Golf Playa Serena and the Spanish Federation for their work in bringing this event to fruition.
“We are looking forward to returning to Spain with the Challenge de España coming at a vital time in our season, and it will certainly be a defining week on the 2023 Road to Mallorca“.
The Challenge de España is the result of the union of forces of institutions that are committed to golf: the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, the Consejo Superior de Deportes, the City Council of Roquetas de Mar, the Diputación de Almería, the Junta de Andalucía, the Challenge Tour, the Real Federación Andaluza de Golf, as well as Kyocera (official printing services), Allianz, Mahou San Miguel, Solán de Cabras, AON, BCD Sports, Rentokil, Titleist, Hotel Bahía Serena and Nextcaddy.
