Golf Shafts – Double Major win for KBS at Women’s PGA & U.S. Senior Open
June 29, 2022 – KBS, the pioneering golf shaft brand that offers a high-performance shaft for every club in the bag for any type of golfer, celebrated a double Major victory at the weekend across two Tours – the LPGA and PGA Tour Champions.
More than 40% of the field at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship had a KBS shaft in the bag and it was a record-breaking week at the Congressional Country Club with the 27-year-old becoming only the third South Korean, In Gee Chun, to win three or more Majors and it was her 15th professional win and her first since 2018.
Using the revolutionary KBS Players Graphite Iron (PGI) shaft (90g) that breaks the mould for conventional graphite shafts aimed at players with slower swing speeds, she opened with a course record shooting 64 on a day with tough conditions giving her a five-shot lead. The round was that good it was 12 strokes better than the field average and CBS Sports suggested it ‘was not only the best round at this tournament over the last decade, but one of the great rounds in professional golf this century.’
Her bag also contained a KBS TD Graphite shaft (60g Category 3) in her 3 wood, 7 wood and 9 wood, along with the KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype (75g) in her hybrids. She went onto win by one stroke and the wire-to-wire victory gained her $1.35 million after KPMG announced the total purse would double for this year’s event to $9 million, which is amongst the highest in women’s golf, bested only by the U.S. Women’s Open ($12 million), which she won in 2015.
“Our Tour team worked closely with her for about three-weeks leading up to the PGA and she only just put the PGIshafts in the bag,” said Director of R&D and master shaft-maker Kim Braly.
“We started with the 80g because her swing speed with a 6-iron is around 80-82 mph, which is what that weight and flex in roughly designed for. She felt she needed a little more weight to be comparable to what she was used to and from there we went to the 90g soft stepped to give the extra weight and feel she was looking for. Once we figured out the irons, it was easy with the KBS fit system to implement the hybrids and woods,” he added.
The KBS Players Graphite Iron shaft offers golfers of all abilities – from junior to elite level – tangible performance benefits that measure up to steel shaft options and features graphite golf shaft technology wrapped for golfers, enabling playability beyond the universal standard for graphite shafts.
The shaft provides the same tight dispersion as every other KBS golf shaft in its category. It also has the same frequency (4.0) as most of its steel predecessors, plus a dynamic mid-kick point reaction per shaft giving the player roughly a 5% better trajectory; 5% more control; and 5% more distance than any other graphite iron shaft on the market.
The second Major victory came at the U.S. Senior Open Championship at Saucon Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania with the Irishman Padraig Harrington rolling back the years to claim his fourth Major title and first on the PGA Tour Champions using KBS TOUR-V shafts (125g) in his irons and the TOUR-V (120X) in his wedges.
Including his back-to-back Open Championship titles at Carnoustie in 2007 and Royal Birkdale in 2008, and the USPGA Championship at Oakland Hills in 2008, the former World number three has 32 global victories to his name.
The win, his first USGA title on his U.S. Senior Open debut was by one shot following rounds of 71-65-66-72 for a -10 total.
The KBS TOUR-V is a lightweight steel shafts that features larger outer diameters, resulting in a stable tip section and tight shot dispersion for players that prefer a lighter weight shaft and less ball spin.
“It’s great to have two more Major to add to the list and we congratulate both winners on their victories,” said Kim Braly.
“This is what we as a team work so hard for. Making the perfect golf club for these men and women to go out a show the world how good they are. It’s a privilege to see the hard work up close and we’ll continue to innovate and produce the best golf shafts on the market for every club in the bag,” he added.
Played by more than 300 Tour players worldwide, KBS partners with every club manufacturer in the game and offers 30 different shafts through the golf bag, including 18 iron options featuring different weights and flexes. Along with the wood and hybrid options, there is also four wedge shafts offering different weights, flexes and trajectory; and two putter shafts, including the 1 One Step. All KBS shafts are designed to benefit the game of the broadest range of golfers – from global Tour stars to accomplished amateurs and juniors.
