TaylorMade Golf – First look and first shots of the R1 Black Driver

Junio 11, 2013 – It won’t be long before we see the new TaylorMade Golf R1 Black driver in the Spanish and European golf shops – they say it’ll arrive from July 1 onwards -, and I really want to see both of them, the black and the white next to each other, and to hit some balls off the tee alternating them to feel the differences.

Meanwhile, to satisfy my own curiosity, and probably yours too, I’ve got hold of photos of both products and I’ve put them side by side to start comparing them. This is the result:

And what will go through my/your/our mind/s when, in the window of my/your/our golf shop/s, the R1 Black shines out from all the surrounding white R1s? This is what happened last May 30 in a golf shop, the Roger Dunn Golf Shop in Santa Ana (California, USA), when customers discovered the new black driver for the first time, under the watchful gaze of a hidden camera.

By the way, the TaylorMade Tour Staff professionals on the PGA Tour have been the first to see, touch and try the new R1 Black. Dustin Johnson, Sean O’Hair, Boo Weekley… have taken their first look and made their first shots at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis. Here in the picture Dustin Johnson, who average 335.7 yards off the tee his first round playing the new R1 Black.

We’ll have to wait and see which pros decide to switch from the white to the black driver, possibly the ‘guilty party’ responsible for the decision of the multi-national to return to the traditional black colour.

This does mean that they’ll no longer have the help of the visual contrast of the black face against the white crown in the stance and in the moment of impact. However, they probably control the drive so well that this is not an issue.

And take a look at the presentations in the video of Paul Loegering, Global Sports Marketing Manager on the PGA Tour, Keith Sbarbaro, Vice President of Tour Operations, and Wade Liles, PGA Tour Technician of TaylorMade Golf. They all sound convinced that the return to the black driver will be a big success.
