June 9, 2014 – The prestigious Italian sportswear brand Colmar has a stronger presence this year in the golf world, and its modern, stylish and technical 2014 Spring-Summer Collection is accompanied by victories on the European Tour, with Alejandro Cañizares at the Trophee Hassan II and Marco Crespi at the NH Collection Open.

This season Colmar has focussed on Spanish golf, and it is dressing Alejandro Cañizares as its image-leader. This is a golfer that has started very well this season 2014 recording four Top 10 so far: the champion in the Trophee Hassan II, fifth in the Qatar Masters, sixth in the South African Open, and seventh at the recent Open de España.

We met Alejandro at the PGA Catalunya Resort, and asked him for his thoughts about being a new Colmar staff player. It’s a very Latin team in the European Tour, as three other Italian playersn also share the brand image: Marco Crespi, Edoardo Molinari and Andrea Pavan.

MYGOLFWAY: Colmar is one of the most valued sportswear brands in winter sports. How do you think its introduction into golf is going?
ALEJANDRO CAÑIZARES: Given that it is a new, young brand in golf, I think it’s doing very well. The clothing is good quality, modern and very comfortable, and above all it is technical clothing, which is very suitable for warmth and breathability. The truth is that I’m very happy.

MGW: How have they been able to create such a good collection of high performance apparel for golf?
AC: Obviously they’ve been in the world of skiing for many years. They know a lot about materials and fabrics, and have taken advantage of their knowledge of the twists and movements of the body in skiing to make garments that also help the swing in golf. I think they are perfectly qualified.

MGW: Not many golfers are sponsored by Colmar on the European Tour. It’s clear that the confidence of the Italian brand is not available to any player. Do you feel privileged?
AC: I feel very happy to have signed with Colmar and start with them this year. I think it is a very strong brand and it really helps golfers. When a brand like Colmar sets its sights on you, it makes you feel that someone believes in you, and that’s an extra motivation for every player. I hope to live up to their confidence in me, and to continue with them.

MGW: Why do you think Colmar has picked you for its image in Spain and Europe?
AC: I think because I‘ve been playing in the Tour for many years, I’ve been fairly regular, I’ve won a few times… So I guess they see me as someone with high expectations, that I can still do great things, and I hope they are right!

MGW: Well, that has already been demonstrated. You just sign, and then you go and win in Morocco. They really got it right. How was your Trophée Hassan II win, in the Moroccan heat?
AC: It wasn’t that hot! It was quite windy, and some days it was cool because of the breeze from the sea. But yes, I really felt very comfortable. I noticed that the clothes helped me and made me feel great. So it was a great week all around.

MGW: What competitive advantages do you think Colmar garments bring you?
AC: As they are so advanced, especially regarding technical fabrics, mainly in comfort. For a golfer it’s paramount to feel comfortable. You need to be comfortable and have clothes that help you feel comfortable in yourself, and especially when you’re making a swing.

MGW: What is your favourite garment on the golf course?
AC: The technical polo shirts with cocona are the ones I like most. They are really lightweight and comfortable.

MGW: And your favourite colours? Any particularly colour for Sundays?
AC: Sky blue and white. I used to keep the white for Sundays, but not any more. It just depends, I’m dropping some of my fixed ideas.

MGW: You are currently the top Colmar player in the Race to Dubai ranking. Do you consider yourself the leader of the team in the European Tour?
AC: Well, yes I am the highest one in the ranking, but the team also has a player who has been in the Ryder Cup: Edoardo Molinari. It was some time ago, but he’s certainly a example to follow. He came from the Challenge Tour and the next year he qualified for the Ryder Cup, which is something that almost nobody has done. So I don’t see myself as the leader. We are a good team of three Italians and one Spanish player. A Latin team that I think can do great things together.
