Instruction – How to choose your golf instructor? (VII): Level of Play

Just as golf equipment advances through technology, so does golf instruction. Just as we find a great variety of drivers, irons, putters and golf balls to choose from, although we might not aware of it, there is also quite an ample choice of golf teachers – two or three per club, for sure. And choosing one is not an easy job if you’re not clear about your preferences and requirements.

To help you, under the heading “How to choose your golf instructor?” we offer you a series of short articles outlining the basics you should consider in order to find your ideal instructor.

1. COMPATIBILITY
2. QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
3. SWING AIDS
4. VIDEO ANALYSIS
5. TECHNOLOGICAL AIDS
6. FITNESS
7. LEVEL OF PLAY

Another not so critical but important aspect is the level of play of your golf pro. Interesting facts you should know are: Is he o she able to play at professional level? Is he or she able to hit under 80 in a round?

Although some will make you think otherwise, your golf pro doesn’t have to be a great player. You can rest assured that the top players in the Tour will not automatically be good teachers.

Some professionals are good at giving clinics offered to their sponsors’ clients, explaining their experiences, how they hit this or that shot, and what they do to get out of difficult lies.

Yes, most of the best golf world instructors have played in professional Tours. In any case, if your teacher cannot perform well in a smaller tournament or in a Pro-Am – although age may be an issue here -,but  consider: would you trust someone who cannot demonstrate the skills you are hoping to be taught?

At least, he or she should have a background, success in a certain tournament that gives credibility in the relevant category as a professional golf instructor.
