Lumine Golf – IAGTO Award for great dedication to Sustainability
November 18, 2013 – Lumine Mediterránea Beach & Golf Community in Tarragona (Spain), amongst Europe’s most inspiring golf resorts, has been named recipient of one of the first ever IAGTO Sustainability Awards (Efficient use of Resources), in collaboration with the Golf Enviroment Organization (GEO).
The level of compliance with the requirements set by this organization regarding aspects such as pollution prevention, the responsible use of energy or the optimization of water consumption, have earned Lumine Golf the award.
“It is testament to the vision of our owners to receive this award,” commented Calle Carlsson, General Manager of Lumine Golf & Beach Club on receiving the award. “Throughout our operations, sustainability remains central to our management of people, the planet and profit. Specifically, diversifying water sources, recycling treated wastewater and utilising modern, ultra-efficient technology to operate the irrigation system highlights our achievements as a sustainable golf resort. We are proud recipients of one of the first-ever IAGTO sustainability awards, which are a ground-breaking development in golf resort management.”
A reduction of 34% of the total irrigated area, and a plan to extend diversification into renewable energy shows Lumine Golf’s commitment to resource management.
GEO VERIFICATION
Lumine Golf, venue of the 2013 International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), stands out for the management of the integrated water cycle of its facilities: irrigation of the three golf courses (45 holes) is performed entirely with treated water coming from the nearby wastewater treatment station (EDAR), which is then desalinated by osmosis thanks to the desalination plant that belongs to the resort. This measure protects the wetland, Sequia Major, of high ecological value adjacent to the Lakes Course.
This resort, managed by Troon Golf, is also known for its efforts to prevent any contamination that could be generated by the resort activities, as well as an exhaustive control of the products used in day to day management, and managing the natural heritage of the facilities. These and other features can be reviewed in the fact sheet of Lumine Golf at the Golf Environment Organization (GEO) website, along with the report of the audit conducted by Alejandro Nagy, GEO Accredited Verifier and golf and sustainability independent consultant (cgolfsostenible). The achievement of this certificate, added to those already gained (ISO 14001, EMAS and Audubon), highlights Lumine Golf for it strong commitment to the environment and society.
