Books – Unconscious Putting, of Dave Stockton
February 10, 2013 – Dave Stockton is a veteran golf champion and teacher, with a history spanning five Majors (two PGA Championships in 1970 and 1976, the 1996 Senior Open, and two Senior Players Championships in 1992 and 1994), and whose wisdom on putting has been reflected in several books, and many players. The success of Rory McIlroy in reading the greens, and in stroke control under pressure, is attributed to this coach, who is highly regarded on the professional Tours.
In the book ‘Putt to win’ (in Spanish Ediciones Tutor, 3rd edition) this Californian master gave us a lesson on the mechanics of successful putting, and taught us to read the greens and control the distance. Now under the title ‘Unconscious Putting’, also published in Spanish by Ediciones Tutor (2013), he explains his innovative philosophy about the putt, leading us to putt effortlessly and confidently. Its pages integrate a new mental focus, with simple physical routines focused on making the stroke an unconscious act.
Stockton’s breakthrough concept is that every player has his or her own Signature Stroke, which is unconscious. Good putting comes from the mind, Stockton says, not from a series of stiff mechanical positions. With visualization, the right frame of mind, an efficient pre-putt routine, and connection to the individual internal stroke signature, any player can make far more successful putts.
Annika Sorenstam, Yani Tseng, Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Matt Kuchar, J.B. Holmes, Martin Laird, and most recently Rory McIlroy, are some of the pros who have relied on the simple putting lessons of Dave Stockton.
