Overcome with Bob Vokey Design wedges SM4

November 1, 2011 – Also at Archerfield Links (Scotland) I have the good fortune to meet Bob Vokey, a Canadian recognized by the golf industry as a master artisan production of wedges. Here he present his new collection SM4, that despite the restrictions of the USGA and R&A, with Titleist has gone a step further by putting them closer to the current limits.

Vokey Design wedges are the fourth generation of SM4 Design Spin Milled, and the first wedges that Titleist launches after the controversial Groove Rule, offering the best technology of the Spin Milled industry, hand in hand with Bob Vokey. “I’m lucky to work with the best players in the world,” says Bob. Having worked for TaylorMade, Maruman and then with his own independent label during his career, his entry in Titleist at mid-90 led him to the internationalization of his vision of creating wedges from the U.S., to bring them not only to Europe but also Asia, especially Japan, Korea and China.

“In recent years we have had great success with Bob wedges on the Tour, and also in the market,” said Steve Pelisek, CEO of Titleist clubs. “That’s why we have created a development team for wedges with the aim to perpetuate Vokey Wedges as market leaders in quality wedges, marked by design goals that are within the rules limits.”

Conservative designs of CC and Tour Proto grooves have already moved into the second generation of the more extreme SM4 grooves, which makes the radius of the more aggressive edges, while that from the 14 have passed to the 17 grooves. Reach the legal limit requires all the grooves be inspected in each of the wedges that manufactures, whose faces are then heat treated to increase durability of the edges of their grooves, all to offer the best combination of spin and stopping capacity on the green.

“I consider wedges a distinct set of clubs,” explained Vokey.  “We offer 10 different wedge lofts from 46 to 64 degrees.  Your pitching wedge should have a different shape, top line, bounce and leading edge than your lob wedge because you’re asking each club to perform very different jobs.  This is where CAD has been so valuable.  It allows us to produce a series or set of wedges that progress perfectly from loft to loft.”

More choices of models, lofts, bounce and soles to fill the gaps, all designed to let the ball close to the flag. His appearance is also improved, with a slightly enlarged teardrop shape, and different finishes to choose between Tour Chrome, Oil Can and Black Nickel.

The precision shots require precision technology, and that is what is out there with the SM4 Vokey Design wedges, a high performance, with the most requested shape in the Tour and soles defined by the master Bob Vokey, and the enhancement of technology Spin Milled in the face to give them the maximum spin and shot control.
